, Weakness, Occasional dizziness, Fatigue, Overall sense of malaise.
This all started in June. My wife and I were at dinner one night and while we were eating I suddenly felt nauseous and that I had to go to the bathroom. I got the chills
and had a loose bowel movement. This happened a couple of times while we were there. I didn't think much of it, chalking it up to coming down with a cold. Days went by, and still I had loose stools. The same thing happened again weeks later while out to dinner with some friends. This time I suddenly lost my appetite after a few bites
of my food and had to race to the restroom. The final event happened a week later when I was helping my wife make dinner. I suddenly felt dizzy and needed to go lay down. As soon as I was in bed I became cold and clammy and got the shivers. My heart started racing and I felt like I was having a heart attack. I went to the emergency
room that evening and the doctor diagnosed me with costrochondritis. He issued me some anti-inflammatory and sent me home.
I followed up with my GP who ordered lots of blood work and a stool sample to rule out parasites. All the test results came back normal. He then ordered a colonoscopy as my symptoms started getting worse. The GI Specialist put me on Lialda thinking that I had ulcerative colitis. The results from the colonoscopy and biopsies came back normal. He then ordered a barium CAT scan with iodine to see if there was something else going on, those results were also negative.
I started to do a little bit of research on my own and began reading about stomach/intestinal yeast infections. Is it possible that I have a yeast infection in my stomach or intestinal tract?
I'm a big believer in the yeast problem. I had a book on the Yeast syndrome that I read years ago. After reading it, I thought...I bet I have that problem. But, as per my usual self, I didn't correct my diet to see if it would help me. But several years later, I tried getting off of gluten (wheat, barley, rye and oats) due to other symptoms and family history. One of the things that would happen to me was diarrhea at the start of the diet for a few days and maybe every week or two after that. The diarrhea smelled like musty mold (yeast die off?). I think so. I would get the goosebumps while it came out (sorry for the graphics) and have a headache and dizziness. Then when the episodes would pass, I noticed I felt so much better and the ringing in my ears (which I've had for a long time) would decrease to barely audible. After studying the yeast thing, I found out that if you have food intolerances (milk and gluten being the usual problems) you can't digest these foods and they ferment, basically giving the yeast a satisfying meal and contributing to overgrowth. I've tried the diet several times, and each time got the same result. If you'd like to give it a try, do a gluten free, milk free, Atkins style diet to starve the yeast that you might have. Take some good probiotics to balance out your intestinal flora and see how it goes. Or, if you don't want to be that radical (because that is a tough diet for most people) just try the gluten free diet first and see what happens. And I hope you update this post to let us know what happened, or didn't happen. Good luck! Hope this helps!
