Possible ulcer or stomach cancer?

by emendel, Jan 11, 2003 12:00AM
I am a 51 year old male. For the last 2 weeks, I have had fairly constant nausea, with some belching. I have had occasional stomach and/or abdomenal (abdominal) discomfort, but nothing extreme. I have had no other symptoms... no fever, no vomiting, no blood in stool. Eating doesn't seem to make a difference. Sometimes the nausea is very slightly better after eating, with a slight increase in stomach or intestinal discomfort.

I was diagnosed with having a duodenal ulcer maybe 25-30 years ago. I was then put on carafte, which worked fine. I am currently taking it again, 4 times a day. I just saw my doctor yesterday, and he said to continue taking it, and if the nausea persists for the next 4 weeks or so, to see him again, and he may prescribe an additional medication for the nausea.

My concern is the possibility of stomach cancer and not an ulcer. I am not in any high risk groups (I am a white male, not a smoker, etc.), except for family history. My mother had colon cancer (I have had regular colonoscopies that have all been fine, no polops) and her sister passed away from stomach cancer.
I am concerned since apparently the early symptoms of stomach cancer are very non-specific, and can start with the simple symptoms I am displaying, nausea and belching. The doctor told me that it was very unlikely I had stomach cancer unless I was displaying more severe symptoms, but I thought those symptoms didn't display until quire late, before much could be done about it.

Any opinions?

Hi,

Have you had any scopes of your stomach with biopsies taken? That doctor needs to do something, and not just medicate you! Especially with your history. Be persistent, ad change docs if need be.
