Post Gallbladder Surgery Problems

Hi..I had Gallbladder removal a year ago. Before I had surgery, I had a terrible time with severe bloating. I was told this was due to a bad gallbladder..I had many stones, evidentally it was bad for a long time. After removal I began to bloat again..but mostly when I eat sugar.  I am on the South Beach Diet, and the problem has almost gone away.  However, when I eat something with sugar, I swell in front of my upper abdomen and cannot breathe at times.Could this be a Pancreatic problem? I was wondering if anyone out there has similar symptoms..sometimes I feel as if the front of my upper abdomen will burst.

doctors keep saying this is impossible. I think they like to say this when they don't have answers! I have worse attacks now than before the surgery over a year ago. this what I am going to put below might help.

I too had my gall bladder removed.  I still have very similar pains now.  I was just diagnosed with H Pylori.  Do a search of it and see if the symptoms match any of what you are experiencing.  I have gone undiagnosed for over 10 years and finally diagnosed myself through the internet and friends, after consulting several doctors.  The doctors try to treat the symptoms and ignore the cause.  It can be diagnosed by a Breath Test and treated with multiple antibiotics.  Good Luck!

I don't know which is worse. What you have or what I delt with for years. ??? Did you have the stones removed with a laproscopy (what ever)??? My entire gallbladder was removed. Dr.back in the 80's told me it was infected and inflamed. I was very ill. Anyway my problem was chronic diarreah. From the time I got up till noon, if I consume anything before noon it was even worse. I finally asked Dr. for the med. my brother started after his surgery ( he had the same prob. as I) I really helped. ???Bloating or Diarreah??? I don't know which is worse. Gallbladder surgery has many complications.  Good Luck.Check with your Dr. there must be an answer.  cat33

I thought i was going mad here ! I am nearly three weeks post op and am having terrible bloating on the upper right side of my abdomen and i am experiencing pain in my back around the shoulder blade area. Any ideas people? The bloating is making me want to go to the toilet constantly and when i go, its almost a waste of time. Has anyone else had these problems? so much for getting out the gall bladder and all will be fine !

Gas and bloating is an extremely common complaint. It also has various ways to occur making it sometimes a bit complicated to determine the cause.

One is your stomach acid may be insufficient. You may want to consider taking a betaine hydrochloride supplement to assist in making your stomach more acid. This will then trigger your pancreas to release enzymes for digestion as well.

If your stomach acid is sufficient, then it may be a lack of pancreatic enzymes. Taking a good pancreatic enzyme support supplement may resolve the gas and bloating if this is the case.

If your pancreatic enzymes are sufficient, then it may be due to a sluggish gall bladder. Your liver may need some assistance with either producing bile or releasing bile. A good naturopathic physician can determine which is needed.  One has a hint of the bile/gall bladder being a problem when they get gas and bloating with fatty foods.  Bile is what breaks down fats for you.

w/o a gall bladder doesn't one need to cut back on thier fat intake?

Could the pain/discomfort be related to diet?

Same here. I had my gall bladder removed in MArch and I just had a CT scan for the bloating and severe lower back pain. THey saw nothing.Do you have the lower back pain as well? They are trying to get me to have a colonoscopy and I do not want to, because I think it is my diet. I am not a junk food eater, but every once in a while I want sweets.

Any comments?

I have been having this same problem since my gallbladder surgery 7/3/07.  I was beginning to think I was crazy.  I am feeling EXACTLY how you described above!  Have you aquired any answers to this bloating/breathing problem?  I would really like to know any information that you have found out and how you are doing up to this date.

I can relate to everything, the bloating, feeling like it interfere's with breathing, also when you had problems with the sugar, where you having sugar cravings???
