Post Nissen Fundoplication

by marty__0, Sep 20, 1998 12:00AM

I had a Nissen fundoplication and a hiatal hernia repair about
6 months ago. All went well. About 2.5 months ago I started having
what seemed to be occasional reflux. After the symptoms began to
get worse ( heartburn, reflux, difficulty swallowing) and more
frequent I had an esophogram and an upper GI which showed a small
hiatal hernia. I then had a gastric empting study which I was told
did not show any reflux. Right now I am only taking tums. Do you
have a clue to what is going on? I see the Dr. again in a few weeks.

dear Marty,
gastric emptying tests assess the rate at which material leaves the stomach.  It is not a good test for esophageal reflux.  To assess reflux you should have a 24 hr pH probe study.  While you await the appointment with the physician, you should try symptomatic treatment with over-the-counter H2 receptor antagonists e.g, Pepcid AC.
