Post gallbladder removal digestive problems

by irunpink, May 23, 2007 12:00AM
I'm a 22 year old girl (96 lbs and 5'3" but I've lost weight), I eat healthy and exercise, but I've been having some issues with my digestive system.  I've recently had my gallbladder removed (about 1 month ago), because a HIDA scan test revealed a 17% ejection fraction rate.  Before it was removed, I was experiencing severe heartburn and bloating but an endoscopy ruled out an ulcer. It seems the heartburn itself has subsided, and in the first few weeks following the surgery, I felt a lot better.  But then about 2.5 weeks ago I began experiencing severe abdominal cramping, gas, and diarrhea (before this started, my bowels were normal, I'd even get somewhat constipated).  In between the random bouts of diarrhea, I tend to have an uneasy feeling in my gut; it's a combination of gas, bloating, loss of appetite, and nausea (magnified with diarrhea).  I've recently started taking soluble fiber.  This helps a little, but I still have the nausea and bloating and I can't get out of my house most of the time because I feel so ill.  It seems my entire digestive system has been out of sync since the gallbladder removal.  I've tested positive for antinuclear antibodies, and was diagnosed with IBS in high school, but I'm not sure if this is associated with an autoimmune disease or bile sensitivity.  Where should I go from here as far as medical tests and lifestyle changes are concerned?

Diarrhea can be an uncommon side effect of gallbladder removal.  Fatty meals would tend to exacerbate this symptom.  I agree with increasing the amount of fiber in the diet.  Normally, the diarrhea would resolve over time.  Taking more frequent, smaller meals may help as well.

If the symptoms continue, further evaluation of the upper digestive tract, including an upper endoscopy or upper GI series can be done.

If IBS continues to be suspected, antispasmodic agents can be considered.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
