Progressing stomach problems...nerves?

by Doug__0__0, Oct 07, 1998 12:00AM

Long story, but will be brief.  3 months ago I had mild lower abdominal pain (left side below naval).  I went to doctor who ran physical, blood, urine, reg x-ray...nothing found.  Pain persisted, I returned, he ran sed rate, more urine, and flexible sigmoidoscopy.  nothing found.  Pain persisted (and increasing worry of cancer) so i returned and told him my fears.  doctor ordered CT scan of entire abdomen.  FOUND, mesenteric cyst, lower right quadrant near appendix (2.5 X 3 cm) "no other abnormalities found".  had enteroclysis to confirm.  doctor said if pain is mild leave it alone, non-invasive or threatning cyst.  past two weeks pain has persisted and moved to upper left quadrant under bottom left rib, now accompanied by excessive belching after eating (i never had this problem).  fearing stomach cancer i phoned doc, he worte it off as stress due to worry about other pain and prescribed sedative?!  could this be stomach cancer as i fear? do any of the above tests rule this out?    p.s.: i am 28, otherwise excellent health...always eat VERY healthy, my weight is 190 and has remained steady??  thank you!

Dear doug,
Fear of cancer is vcery common in our society.  Fortunately for you your symptoms are not suggestive of cancer.  Most likely your belching is the result of swallowed air and stress.  IF you want proof that you do not have cancer, ask your doc to order an upper GI x-ray.
