Propulsid

by Garth__0, Jul 01, 1998 12:00AM

  Hi again,
I tried to post this on the other entry (Chronic Bloating)
but for some reason it would not let me.  I just wanted to let
you know that I tried Propulsid and experienced severe headache
and diarrhea.  I then read the small print on the product insert
and found that over 20% of patients experienced headache and 15%
experienced diarrhea.  Double digit side effects seem incredibly high to me.  Irregardless, I have ceased taking this medication.
What tests are available to test whether the stomach is passing
food to the intestine too quickly?  Secondly, what tests are available to test bacteria content?  As before, thanks for your assistance.

Dear Garth,
A gastric emtying study will provide some information regarding the rapidity of food leaving the stomach.
If bacterial overgrowth is suspected, most physicians will try empiric therapy with a broad spectrum antibiotic such as tetracycline.  This approach is chosen because the frequent bacterial contamination of small bowel aspirates that makes counting of bacteria an exercise in futility.
This information is presented for educational purposes only.  Always consult your personal physician for specific medical questions.
