Protonix or Prilosec and GERD

I have been coughing for about 7 years now. Last March after several tests, the doctor prescribed me Protonix. After 3 months of use, the coughing was drastically reduced. But after the prescription ran out, the coughing started up again. So I assume I have GERD or some other stomach acid issue?  I haven't had my esophagus checked out for damage caused in the 7 years. Now I am hearing about Prilosec. Will this medication have the same effect as Protonix? Since it says it should only be used for 14 days every 4 months, could it be something more serious than GERD?

Prilosec and Protonix are in the same class of medication and thus should have the same effect.  

If you are having long-standing GERD, it may be wise to consider an upper endoscopy to make sure that inflammation of the stomach or esophagus or Barret's esophagus isn't present.

Regarding taking the medication for longer than 14 days, that is something that should be discussed with your personal physician.  

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Don't downplay the seriousness of GERD..The reason the OTC PPIs advise to only take for 14 days is because if your symptoms persist for longer than that, you need a medical evaluation..If you have had these problems for 7 yrs then I would think a workup by way of EGD would be more beneficial than just trying to treat the symptoms...A 24 hr PH probe test would also evaluate for reflux....

Prilosec and Protonix are in the same drug class and should have the same effects.  Only your personal physician can guide you as to taking them longer that 14 days.

Anyone with gerd will tell you that some ppis work better than others in individuals-- they most definately don't have the same effects- different inactive ingrediants--metabolized differently- longer and shorter half lifes etc.

There is always one PPI that works better in others- some cause side effects where others don't- different bases- etc.

I just came out of a week in intensive care for a gastric ulcer. It was located near the hiatel hernia wrap that I had done in 1996. I have now been prescribed Protonix. How has this been working for people? Have you altered your diet?

Everyone with GERD and/or related problems should make dietary changes...We shouldn't have any caffeine, chocolate, citrus fruits, carbonated beverages, fried foods, mints, pepper,aspirins, if I eat something and it bothers me then I leave it alone....The PPIs are good but this is an illness that we have to do our share of the work or we may not get better...
