RARE CASE (GIST IN RETROPERITONEAL AREA)

by susum, Aug 07, 2008 12:49PM
My husband has been diagnosed with GIST and he has more than one tumor in his stomach and there is reccurance, they thought he had high grade liposarcoma, but when his case was revised again and tested it came out to be gist, and was prescribed to use glivec, the problem is my husband has been vomiting before he has had glivec becuase the tumors are putting pressure on his stomach and causing more pain so he vomits green bile constantly 24 hours in the day and has not gone to the bathroom or digested anything for weeks!, all doctors have different opinions here some doctors say to keep him on glivec for the month to see if its working in shrinking the tumor, and at the same time my husband is so week and has been on painkillers, ivs you name it everything and nothing is working, a blood test has shown that there might even be activity in the liver, and other doctors are saying to do a bypass surgery to open the intestines this way he will be able to eat and digest, or do the big operation in taking out all of the tumors but the big tumor is in a dangerous nerve bye the retroperitoneal are and they said they want to take some of it and sacrafice the kidney he has had two surgerys already before one was a huge mass 25X20 and the second was found on the colon so they had to take parts of that, and now there are more and the doctors are saying glivec is not working the way they want it to since he vomits the glivec after 1 hour of taking it, we have not said yes to surgery yet and im so confused and dont know what to do, in this country(israel) not to many people know of this case, and i was hoping if there is anyone out there who can help us it would mean so much to me, my husband is 37 years old and we have three kids, i really hope we can figure out what is wrong and hopefully he will get better i really hope if there is anyone can help thank you.

Susum, GIST's in the U.S. are considered a really rare happening. I think it's thought that only about 6,000 cases are seen a year. But you may want to browse through this article to see if you can find some information of help: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_4_4x_Treatment_Choices_-_GIST.asp?rnav=cri

I'll see if I can find anything on any of the updated medical sites that may be of help.
