RECOVERY TIME FOR LAPROROSCOPIC NISSAN SURGERY

RECENTLY I HAD LAPROSCOPIC NISSAN FOR GERD AND A HYATAL HERNIA, THE SURGERY WAS A SUCCESS, BUT MY QUESTION WAS; WHERE CAN I GET PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FOR HOW LONG RECOVERY FROM THIS SURGERY SHOULD TAKE?(OUTSIDE MY OWN PHYSICIAN)

I am about to schedule this surgery and worry about post-op complications, but my surgeon told me the following:

No driving for a week
Back to work in two weeks
Eat solids after two days
Difficulty in swallowing for up to 12 weeks until swelling subsides
Possible pain with deep breathing in shoulder area for several weeks
Complications:
Recurrence (1%) of symptoms
Permanent bloating, gas, inability to belch (upwards of 10%)

I had the laproscopic fundoplication surgery last June and I was told  would be out of work for 6 weeks. For me, that was right on the nose - I needed those 6 weeks to recover.  I was on mushy, soft foods for a week and then gradually added solids, but it was about a month before I was comfortable with any kind of meat. After years of horrible Gerd, it was wonderful to be free of it.  However, I wish I was more prepared for the after affects.  It has taken months to get them resolved, and even then they are something you'll live with the rest of your life.

I agree with Nelady. I had the Nissan procedure done in Sept of 1995.  The doctor told me up front it would take every bit of 6 weeks before I'd feel up to going back to work.  They were right on target.  It was 6 weeks to the day.  I continued to have trouble eating meals for quite some time after that.  But I eventually got back to eating close to normal.  However, I find I feel better eating 6 small meals instead of 3 big ones.  Best of luck to you with your recovery time.   Take care.
