RUQ Pain

Hey,
I'm a 15 year old, and have had RUQ pain for about 6 months now. The doctors have done everything. They've done a scope, 2 Hydascans, 6 x-rays (of the back & chest), 1 CT scan, 7 ultrasounds (one of those was with dopper), and countless number of bloodtests. As well as trying out medications. I have been diagnosed with IBS, but we've heard by many ER doctors, that some docs will say that, if they can't find anything. We've even gotten a Therapist, for 'stress control' because one of my doctors said it was stress. It's not stress. Not even my Therapist says so. The only idea that keeps flowing through my Primary Care doctors mind is the Gallbladder. Because she had the same problems. So she set me up with a surgon, but we're not sure if we wanna take it out yet. The pain is so sharp, and I'm nauseous 24/7. I don't eat much, and we're even on a low-fat/no-fat diet. And I'm still getting sick! I had to drop out of regular school, to go to an alternative school (2 days a week). And sometimes I can't even go. The pain tumbles me over, and I can't stand it! In the past 6 months, I've lost 12 pounds. I'm getting an MRI soon, to make sure it's not some type of brain tumor, cause I get hot flashes, migraines, and even servere mood swings. I have quite a few doctors working on this constantly. And it seems that not all believe me.
Please help! The pain is soo unbearable!

-Thanks. :)

Hi...I just cam across your post. Your problems seem almost exactly like mine. I, however, having been dealing with the symptoms for nearly three years and just like you have had many, many scans and tests. I was wondering since 3 months have passed since you posted...whether or not it was ever determined to be your gallbladder.

I also wanted to ask you about the hot flashes and migraines...because I have them on a regular basis too! I especially get the hot flashes with sweating at night or after I eat. The migraines are becoming constant.

Would be grateful to hear back from you and hope that things have resolved for you and they found and fixed the problem. Look forward to hearing from you again on this thread.

I think we may give the gluten free diet a try. But when I was in the hospital for a week last month, the doctors had me on that diet and it didn't seem to help. I am constipated and diarrhea, which is a sign of IBS, but my primary care doctor doesn't seem to think that's the cause, though she isn't a Gastroenterology specialist. During both the hydascans, the radiologists came close to stopping the test, cause I was in so much pain. But the function of the Gallbladder was fine. 30/40. However, on the second hydascan, bile was backing up into my stomach. Which the doctors think is the cause of my nausea. Also the hormone levels were fine.

Thanks for all the help!

Many people test negative and yet still find relief on the gluten free diet.  If it doesn't help, at least you can say that this definitely was not the problem...and go on from there in finding the answer to your pain and other symptoms. Are you constipated and having diarrhea (since they mentioned IBS)?  My oldest daughter used to be doubled over in pain every day.  I put her on a gluten free diet and 90% of her pain was gone.  Her other 10% turned out to be milk intolerance.  She was almost always constipated...the milk was the cause of that and the constipation was the cause of her nausea. Hot flashes, migraines and severe mood swings could also be a hormone imbalance (which I'm sure the doctors probably mentioned)....did they check any hormone levels?

Hopefully help is coming your way soon!  Hang in there.

I have been tested for Celiac Disease, and it was negative.

Thanks for the help, though!

Another possibility, they might have even tested for, is celiac disease.  My brother and I had the same exact pain in the same  spot and we both thought we were having gallbladder problems.  The gluten free diet was the cause of the nausea and pain, etc.
Look it up on the internet and maybe give the diet a try - even if you tested negative on bloodtests for it.  Even your vitamin and medications have to be gluten free.  Give the diet several weeks to see if it helps.  I hope this helps!
