Rapid Gastric Emptying

by Little Dog, Oct 20, 2002 12:00AM
Rapid Gastric Emptying.  Can anyone help me with treatment for this problem?  I also seem to crave foods high in carbs and sugar.  Does this sound like something others have had trouble with?  First Dr. told me that I had dumping syndrome, but that is usually after a surgery.  I have had no surgery's.  Any information will be appreciated.  I would like to live my life without worrying where the closest bathroom is.  I have early and late emptying problems.  I had my blood sugar checked yesterday and it is normal.  My grandmother and mother are diabetic, I have be told that I also have hypoglycemia.  Does this have anything to do with the Rapid Gastric Emptying?

Thank you very much.

I also have hypoglycemia and I find that starchy and high carbohydrate meals do not agree with my body and end up in the bathroom with severe cramping and bad gas. My doctor said a diet low in carbs would be ideal (fish/lean meats). As long as I stay away from pasta and breads I can usually avoid the bathroom. I know this doesn't answer your main question but for some reason with hypoglycemia our bodies do not break down the carbs as fast as they used to and that is where you get that tired feeling after a high carb meal.

Thank goodness you both wrote.  Leave it up to the doctors to  provide absolutely no help in this matter.  Dumping? Give me a break.  Both of you are experiencing the same thing my husband suffered from for over two years.  Doctor after doctor, test after test, no diagnosis until we started investigating ourselves.  The problem you're experiencing is actually due to your bodies inability to digest protein, not carbohydrates.  Practically all meals will send you to the bathroom. Although, you may have some other underlying disease that could be causing this, if you've been given a clean bill of health, then I would suspect your small and large intestines are void of the benficial bacterias (lactobacillus acidolphilus and others) that is required for proper digestion of food (particularly proteins).  Find a healthfood store, buy some fresh liquid acidophilus and take 3 tablespoons daily (morning, noon, and night).  Because you could also have Candidiasis (sugar cravings is a symptom), I would cut back on the sugar completely for several months (veggies only). Watch the pounds peel off. Leave the acidophilus on your counter (the bottle will say to refrigerate, but we have always had better results not to).  Stay on it for 3-6 months and watch your problem disappear.
P.S.  My husband's case was caused by long term antibiotic use.  The doctor refers to dumping because antibiotics kill bad AND good bacteria and many people experience antibiotic-induced diarrhea during the mega dosing the usually get during their visit! Read up on the internet, I'm sure you'll find the latest information.   Good luck!

Try good old fashion yogurt. I've had ten surgeries in two years and lots of antibotics and eat two yogurts every day, to replace the good bacteria that was destroyed in my intestines. It helped me. Have you been checked for IBS--I hate that term, but you could have a nervous stomach that causes the rapid emptying. At one time, I had to take reglan to speed up digestion.
