About four months ago I started having abdominal pain.  My doctor ran numerous tests (chest xray, abdominal xray, upper GI Series, ultrasound, stool tests, urine tests, and a colonoscopy).  There were areas in my colon that were found to be inflamed and bloody.  A biopsy was done and I was told by the gastroenterologist that it was not inflammatory bowel disease but was probably an infection that was finishing its course.  But the biopsy written report from the lab indicated that it wasn't an infection.  I am still having pain and mucous with blood in my stools.  I am getting desperate to get some answers.  What are the possible causes?  Could it be lactose intolerance?  Could it be food allergies?  Is it possible that the biopsy could have been wrong and that it could be IBD?

Dear EV,
The colonscopy biopsy usually can not differentiate between inflammationdue to an infection and inflammation due to inflammatory bowel disease.  The persistence of pain, mucus and blood (? also diarrhea) would argue against an infection.  Lactose intolerance does not cause bleeding and mucus, therefore, it is an unlikely explanation for your pain.  I would wonder about inflammatory bowel disease as the cause of your symptoms.  You should meet with your doctor again and discuss possible next steps.
