My 17 year old son has had recurrent bouts of stomach pain for the past two years.  On our first visit to the doctor, we were told it was just a gas pocket.  This so called "gas pocket" would move around, from side to side, and be a visible, protruding lump about the size of a softball.  We were told to watch it and basically it was nothing to worry about.  Our second visit we were told it was gastritis and he was to take Zantac and to watch spicy, fatty foods.  Also some of the problem could be nerves, possible because of his hectic schedule.  He recently had a severe bout after eating a salad with a restaurant house dressing.  He took Zantac and with a bland diet it seems to be better.  There has not been any tests done as of yet.  Is there a special diet or home remedy that you would reccommend.  Is this a problem he will have to endure for life?  I would appreciate any helpful info you might have regarding gastritis, its causes, remedies and diet.  Thank you, Anne

Dear Anne,
Given the prolonged duration of your son's symptoms, an investigation is appropriate.  Discuss with your physician hwo to work up the sumptoms.
