It is more important to know the histology (pathological type) of the polyp than the size. If the polyp is an adenoma, then a
colonoscopy should be performed to rule out other similar lesions throughout the colon. If the polyp is hyperplastic further intervention is not necessary. It would be highly unlikely for the diarrhea to be related to the polyp. Larger polyps can bleed but most often polyps are asymptomatic. If you are unsure as to the thoroughness of your recent flexible
sigmoidoscopy, you should obtain a copy of the procedure report and schedule an appointment to see a gastroenterologist. He or she can analyze this report and explain to you whether or not the procedure was adequate for colon cancer screening. Since your symptoms persist you may require further evaluation and testing.
