by tikigirl, Nov 05, 2001 12:00AM
My husband is 72 years old. he came to me tonight and said he was bleeding in his bowel movement. he said it was bright red, and he has had no complications before this. he has had no rectal problems in the past.no constipation or diarea (diarrhea) either.what could this be?

Dear Tikigirl,

It could be hemorrhoids, or it could be something more serious. Take your husband to a GOOD doctor and get answers!!!

Once you know what is causing the bleeding, you will probably have choices of treatments. There is always hope, no matter what he has! Find out now, the earlier the better.

Good luck to you and your husband!

Maybe others will also give you advice, here.

Sincerely, Concerned lady

i have to agree with concerned lady you need to get him to a gastro/digetive specialest asap as she said the sooner the better anytime you have blood in the stool it warnts quick action.when you go ask them about the colonoscopy test it's one of the best out there for finding digestive problems .god bless you both

bright red blood in the stool is usually due to hemmorhoids, a tear (fissure), or some lower anal irritation, usually nothing serious.  however, whenever blood is visible in the stools, its always important to have other more serious things ruled out, such as colitis, polyps or tumors with a scope called a colonoscopy.  although these are less likely to be the cause, if they are the cause, they can be removed and treated.  my uncle who was around your husbands age had red blood whenever he had a bowel movement, and it just turned out to be polyps that he goes in every couple of years and has removed.  best of luck!!
