Recurring C Diff in 5 Month Old Twins

I am a new mom of 5 month old identical twins. When they were about 2 months old they screamed bloody murder when you would put a bottle in their mouth and hated to eat. Prior to that I stopped breast feeding because I contracted mastitis and was on an antibiotic (but continued to give the babies the breast milk in a bottle). The not-eating continued to get worse so I contacted a GI Specialtist who treated the girls for severe GERD (they would spit up very often as well) and milk allergy (due to bolld in their stool). After several weeks of no changes and worse symptoms we were admitted into the hospital for a colonoscopy, PH probe test and possible bacteria infection to check the girls. Everthing was normal except for the positive C Diff test. The girls went on flagyl for 10 days and were sent home on no more drugs for the acid reflux. They got better, ate over 3-4 oz. and then it happened again! After another positive test we went on vancomyacin. Again, got better, started drinking up to 4-5oz. and then a week ago we checked their stool and it's back AGAIN! I am assuming they have tummy aches and stomach pain and that's why they have no interest in food, but not sure. They only eat when they sleep and I have bleached my house numerous times form top to bottom. We are now on flagyl again and I'm not quite sure what to do at this point. Why can't they get rid of C Diff and can this cause negative long lasting effects on them? Can my dog have it (he did get into a poopy diaper a while back)? Any advise would be GREAT!

Please contact an infectious disease person and work closely with them to try to get to the bottom of the problem. Regular docs don't know enough about the problem to handle it properly and yes, it can cause on-going problems. Also check out suggestions and help at cdiffsupport.org. It's a great group with a LOT of ggod information.

Look at this article I found; it says not to test for cdiff on babies under 12 months:

I would try that otc medicine for colic - you can buy it at babies r us (sorry, I can't remember the name of it, but it worked on my sister's kids - I think it begins with an M)
Blessings, Amy
