Two weeks ago had a right hemicolectomy for a sessile polyp removal that could not be removed endoscopically. The best thing I did for myself was to ask my doc one week after surgery for a referal to a nutritionist to help me develop an eating/food plan to conter act some of the problems associated with the bowel resection
. The nutritionist helped me devise a plan to get enough calories and slowly add in healthy foods and dietary fiber. 15 days post surgery I have minimal diarehea/constipation and am almost eating enough calories.
My question is this --Why aren't consults with a nutritionist offered to colectomy
patients BEFORE they leave the hospital? I suspect a lot of problems people experience post surgery could be minimized with some help with eating/food plans.
