Regurgitation and now chest pain

by goingcrazyhere, May 02, 2006 12:00AM
Hi Dr.
thank you in advance for your time and this great website. I have had some problems with acid reflux about three years ago when I was under tons of stress.  The problem back then was just pain in my chest; I also had some mildly high blood pressure. Now I again am under a lot of stress. I am a 29 year old female.
about three months ago I began having regurgiation of food. this would occur exclusively in the evenings, and after a larger sized meal, though not a huge meal.  The regurgation is generally of food and stomach acids. it is occurring about three times a week.  Now yesterday i began experiencing pain when i take a deep breath in my right back area and slightly in my chest area.
is this related to the regurgitation? is this serious?
thanks

GERD can certainly lead to these symptoms.  A barium swallow and upper GI series can help with the diagnosis.

If GERD is not present, it may be worthwhile to further evaluate the heart - especially given the elevated blood pressure.  An echocardiogram is a reasonable test to evaluate the heart structure.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

For years I had had recurring very painful, sharp stabbing pains behind my right lower ribs-up under the rib cage. Each pain would last a few seconds, every five seconds or so for over a half an hour period. I do have some reflux. After investigation -ultrasounds over the years finding nothing I decided to try a lactose free diet and the pains disappeared completely and now I only have the pains if I have milk with lactose or products with milk. I can eat bought ready made light custards even though the ingredients says whole milk and eat as much as I want, pain free. Cheese,Ice-cream and chocolate are the worst for me.
