Right upper abdominal discomfort

I have diverticulosis and irritable bowel syndrome.  At the moment, I am having upper right abdominal discomfort.  It is not pain, just discomfort.  Nothing hurts when I press on the area.  I feel strange bubbling sensations in the area or some sort of weird movement as if i were pregnant but of course i am not. I am 53 and have had a total hysterectomy.  All my blood work was fine.  I am going for an ultrasound tomorrow to look at gallbladder, liver, pancreas, etc.  I recently started a very low fat, high fiber diet.  I thought maybe i was eating too much fiber too soon and that was causing a problem.  I have since started drinking more water and i took a dulcolax which helped and the discomfort seemed to be gone.  Then, it came back again.  Does anyone have any ideas or does this sound at all familiar to anyone out there.

Your diet is OK, but maybe you're exaggerating with fibers. Yes, it's possible you started quick with a lot of fiberrs. Maybe you can drop some fruits, since fruits are basically sugar + fibers, which both add to bloating.

When i was first diagnosed with diverticulosis and had my first attack of diverticulistis, my gastro dr recommended a low fat/high fiber diet.  So, when i decided to start losing some weight, i started eating very low fat, few meats, lots of vegetables and whole grains and more fruit.  My body was not really used to this.  It was used to fatty foods and sweets.  So, i'm trying to lose the weight and decided to follow the american heart association diet.  It was shortly after i increased my fiber intake that i started with the upper right quadrant pain. Since i started this diet i have not had any sweets or high fatty foods but i have increased my fruits and veggies.  I have lost 12 pounds since started this diet and walking but i now have this upper abdominal discomfort.

Upper right discomfort may still arise from biliary tract. Well, since detailed investigation is neded (MRCP) for thta, you may want to find out, if maybe all arise from bloating.

I'm not sure why you've started with a lot of fibers, if you were not constipated. Try to cur down some simple sugars (sweets, fruits..), which cause bloating. When bloating will go away, you'll se if right upper pain is still there.

Glad your ultrasound was ok. I too, have experienced similar problems for the past year and half or so off and on.  I have a colicky pain under my rib cage, but at times it is sharp pains.  I had a HIDA scan on the Dr. recommendation to see if my gallbladder was functioning properly (it wasn't), had the surgery 5/08 and the pain still continues.....mine was functioning at a 20% level.....be hesitant to have it out.  I have also had an elevated amylase level that no one can figure out.  I have had  ultrasounds and CT with nothing that would explain the pain.  I hope you get answers, just don't rush for the cholecystectomy if it comes to that.  I like you have IBS, and was recommended to be on a diverticular diet.....I think it this is all related.  Good luck......  Hojo81

I had abdominal ultrasound today.  Preliminary results say everything is ok (gallbladder, liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, etc.).  It may be due to irritable bowel.  I have been trying to increase fiber but didn't realize that i also was suppose to increase water, too.  I'm hoping that i don't have a blockage or something.

You must stick to green food. The best is coriander leaves and raw garlic before going to bed.Though its home and natural remedy it may take time to show effect but will surely eliminate the problem. too much of antibiotics will make you confused and restless

Can anyone answer this one?  I have severe upper right pain under ribcage my lipase level was 759 fasting and a week late it was 58 my doctor said he thought it was my pancreas and i had pancreatis.  I have been like that for about three weeks next week I have to have  a tube down my mouth into my stomach to see what is going on.  The pain is constant and never goes away.  I have MS and MG plus heart problems and I have not got much of an immune system as I have an auto immune disorder.  Lorcet does not touch the pain. It is like a knife boring a hole two fingers away from my sternum.  Any ideas my doctor didn't want me to go to my house in georgia and to stay in pbg.  but i went anyway and am sorry i did.  That pain will not let me eat or move much.

Discomfort is probably from gas from fibers. Cut them down somewhat, also reduce sugary foods (sweats, fruits, cola...) You may also want to have a test for H. pylori.
