Rotting Egg Burp/Sulfur Burp

I have had this problem on and off for over 20 years. I have had 5 ulsurs total in assophagus/stomach/and intestines. I also have berretts throat and also have had my gall bladder removed. I take 600mg of zantac a day and 2 doses of prilosec per day. I do not know the cause of this problem, but I do know that I got rid of it imediately by taking pepto bismol. It seems to be the only thing I can find that will rid me of the foul smelling burps. The relief is almost instant and the burp smell almost isntantly disapears. I have tried other products such as tums/rolaids/baking soda and so forth and none work in relieving this problem. Pepto Bismol for me is the best stuff on earth.
I hope this helps some of you as it always helps me.

I have a rotten egg smelly burps for years. Like most of you I was puzzled I didn't understand why and it was embarrassing. Along with it came the bloating diarrhea sometimes constipation a feeling of wanting to vomit. After what seems like an eternity from suffering from this condition, I have a barium enema and my doctor discovered I have dyverticulitus. Direticulitis is an infection in the small intestine which causes sore stomach cramping diarrhea constipation nausea bloated stomach and the rotten egg burps. the reason for the rotten egg burps is it is like a sulfur type reaction because there is an infection in your: which is traveling back up into the stomach and causing a foul smell your burps. dyverticulitus is the disease and cannot be cured but the dyverticulitus part of dyverticulesions can be treated with antibiotics. When it is infected it is called dyverticulitus. It can be a very serious condition if not treated The pockets that performed because of the conditions in the lower intestine can become filled with bacteria and fecal matter the pockets are small rips that appear in the lining these little pockets when irritated can become inflamed and cats all kinds of bacteria and fecal matter. some doctors swear by the old book and tell you not to eat anything with seeds no red meat and stick to a very bland diet. I personally went that route for many years but I still had doubts where my intestines would become inflamed. they don't seem to be getting closer at understanding why these tiny pockets get irritated and become inflamed stress could be part of the reason. but other than that doctors really don't know what is causing it the best thing I can tell you is get checked out by your doctor no they can determine whether you have dyverticulitus through a cat scan. most likely if you are suffering from all of the above symptoms you probly have dyverticulitus.
Thanks msstea

Regarding the 'eggy burp' phenomenon. There are two aspects to this:

1. Taking medication such as Gaviscon will not help matters as this reduces the much needed acid that can rid you of the problem. Other medications such as 'windeze' will not help either. If you are regularly taking Proton Pump Inhibitors this has the effect of course of significantly reducing acid which allows food eaten to quickly ferment and give off the 'eggy' effect creating gas and therefore repeatedly expelling with the nasty smell. One way to potentially resolve this is to not take the Inhibitor (e.g. lansoprozole, omeprozole) as this will allow the acid to sort the problem out and clear any bacterial build up.

2. Whether or not you are taking medication as 1. above, another alternative is to take pro-biotics. The best form is available from health food shops and you should seek to obtain a very high strength capsule dosage that is typically stored in a fridge. with a minimum of 30 billion viable cells of at least 8 strains including Lactobacillus Acidophilus. Couple this with a pro-biotic drink preferably Actimel if you can get it as this contains 10 billion viable cells and take two of these a day, morning and night. Do not buy Yakult as this has only c. 4.5 billion and Vitality is a non-starter as you would need to drink around 50 of these to achieve the same as 1 Actimel.

The other thing you might add into the pot as it were is alkaline water. There are relatively cheap filters c. £45 that will convert tap water with its standard 0PH to alkaline and this can help keep stomach acid lower and a good non-chemical alternative to Gaviscon et al.

Basically, if you consider that before an intake of food your stomach PH will be acidic and measure around 1; after food that will decrease to 4 or 5. If you reduce the acid at this point artificially using medications then you will lose the acidic potency required to neutralise the bad smelling 'eggy burps'.

This has worked very successfully in my trials and I wish you well with your efforts.

I have had  this problem too.  Then someone suggested I take 1 tsp. Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar in a cup of water every morning.  It actually works if I do it every morning like I am suppose to. If I forget for a month or so it comes back, but goes away when I drink my vinegar again.

Since about 14 years old, which is when this began, under sternum bone is so full of pressure/pain that would maybe occur 1 too 4 times a year - the rotten egg smelling burps are constant and continuous. My mother at that time had asked a doctor what promotes this smell because good grief is it FOUL smelling and it can occur before or after eating, or when i wake up in the morning. Has anyone ever found out WHAT would make someone have this sort of rotten smelling burps? curious.
Now that i'm a bit older i do have acid reflux problems but i'm assuming it's from a liver disease issue i now have.
Thanks
anita

I'm having the same problem.  Lot of gas in my stomach follow by intense diarrea. I take Nexium, Prilosec and what ever else falls in my hands.  My doctor send me to get a colonoscopy and an endoscopy with no findings in either.  I'm going nuts with this. And the thing is that it seams to happen around my menstrual cicle. Can anyone help? say something about it, give me an Idea?

I eat pretty healthy. Olive oil, fruits, whole grains, veggies. I don't do sodas or anything in cans.  I really don't know what else to do.  HELP!!!!
