Runner's Trots?

Runner's Trots?

I am 28 years old and an avid runner recentley I have been experincing severe gas and sudden diarrhea preventing me from completing even a normal tempo run. The gas is so bad it bounces in my stomach like a bowling ball and my running partner can actually hear it bouncing. Can you tell me if this is viral or if it is something that will pass on its own.

If it is upper abdominal bloating and you also belch excessively, it may be from H. pylori infection of the stomach, fructose malabsorption (FM) or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

If it is lower abdominal bloating, it may be from lactose intolerance...

If it is infection (food poisoning) it is likely a bacterial or parasitic infection. Bacterial infection should go away in few days, but parasitic infection may last for weeks, heal temporarily, reoccur again..so if it won't heal in some days, you should have a stool test for parasites and, if positive, take prescribed medications. In parasites there's often some mucus in the stool.

"Runner's diarrhea" my be triggered just by running and related circumstances, physical stress...An energy fruit bar or a sport drink with sorbitol or HFCS could cause problems if you've developed fructose malabsorption.
