Second opinion needed from a Gastoenterologist?

by luckycatt, Feb 24, 2009 07:37PM
I want my fiance to get a second opinion, but not sure to whom he should get it.  I will explain the situation.

He developed esoph. cancer  because of GERD (and barretts).  He had that part of his throat removed and his stomach pulled up and reattached.  He had many of complications (leakage, infection...) afterwards in the hospital but can now say he is cancer free.  However, he has not been able to keep much food down and keeps losing weight.  The original surgeon did an xray with contrast and my fiance was told by the person giving him the test that the obstruction was before the stomach - fiance could also see this on the monitor.  The contrast just sat there for quite a while before starting to slowly move thru.

The surgeon just did another surgery to try to fix it, however he keeps referencing a gastric outlet obstr. (which I now understand is after the stomach - not going into) and that is what he attempted to fix.  He did not want to go into the chest because of the complication my fiance had previously, so he said he decided in the surgical room to only work on the stomach.  However he is still throwing up, and is being told that he will have to be put on a feeding tube soon if he continues to lose weight.  (We do understand that the original surgery has permanantly damaged the stomach to a point where it won't work the same as it did before.)

I think he needs a second opinion because I don't believe what the actual problem is has been addressed.  Who should we have look at those tests to see what the true obstruction is, and if the proper surgery was done.  Or if there are any options left to him other than a life of a liquid diet/feeding tube?  He does not want to resolve himself to this unless we can know that there are no other options and our doubts have been addressed.

Thank you in advance for any information/help anyone can provide.
