Severe GERD & maybe gallstones?

by Gwednesday, Sep 21, 2009 09:38AM
hi. I am 33 years old and in good health. In July, I started experiencing what felt like a constant lump in my throat - or a feeling that food was always stuck there.  i went to my GP and she tested my thyroid - all was normal.

Then, a few weeks later I began throwing up every time I ate.  I lost 18 pounds in two weeks. I could not keep food down.  However, I was never nauseous - it was just a burning feeling in my throat and when I would throw up it was bile or just white bubbles. The burning was so annoying - but I had never had heartburn so I had no clue what it was.

Went back to the doctor - she diagnosed me with GERD.  I have tried Protonix, Nexium, Prilosex, Aciphex - everything. I changed my diet and followed the "gerd" diet strictly.  I have tried everything and every 3-4 days I get GERD so bad that I am sent home from work.  It is affecting my life since I work full time and am a grad student at nights and on weekends. I cannot afford to always be yakking up and rubbing my throat raw.

About 3 weeks ago I awoke in the middle of the night to the worst pain I have ever felt.  A sharp, radiating pain from my abdomen that even went through my back. I writhed around in my bed for two hours.  My pain was so severe that I could not even crawl out of my bed to crawl down the hallway to wake up my roomate to take me to the ER.  I just assumed I was having mentstrual cramps and they would go away.  I finally fell asleep and never wanted to go through that again.  I never thought it might be related to my GERD but the doctor says that could have been a gallbladder attack?  Is that possible?

Finally - my parents made me go see a GI specialist.  He has ordered an ultrasound of my gallbladder and an endoscopy for this Thursday.  If he does find out that i have hiatal hernia or something else - what will he do?  More medicine?!?  I am so sick of taking pills.  I feel like i am too young to have all these digestive problems.  I have never had children by the way and am a non-smoker. I am not overweight and exercise 3-4 times a week.

I also have not had my period for 2 months. I am not pregnant.  I never miss my period, never have cramps and am always on a regular cycle.  What is wrong with me?!?

Any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
