Severe Rectal bleeding due to opiate use

by subpop200, Sep 27, 2009 11:10PM
I have used the bathroom twice in the last two days and am coming off the use of opium (not the medication but the pods which contain many opiate alkaloids).  I'm basically withdrawing since I quit and have thrown all the pods away and my way of getting them.  Anyway, I had severe rectal bleeding the past two days including just an hour ago which has me freaked out.  I don't have health insurance so the possibility of going to the hospital is non existant.  Should I be concerned?  It seems like I lost a lot of blood since the toilet paper...going through 4 bundles were drenched in bright red blood and I kept wiping and there was still more but not as much.  There was blood in the toilet as well.  I'm definitely worried...I simply want to know if I can survive this without a hospital visit since like I said, I'm going through enough here and trying to cough up money for a very expensive hospital er stay is going to destroy me financially.  Let me know asap.

Like I said...symptoms are:  2 days, 2 times using the bathroom, seemingly severe rectal bleeding from painful constipation.

I would suggest you see a physician ASAP.  Severe rectal bleeding can be caused by serious conditions.

An endoscopy is suggested, either a flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.  Possible causes can include hemorrhoids, a mass, tumor, cancer, or diverticulosis.

Without knowing exactly what it is, it's difficult to proceed with the next step.
