Severe chest pain

by Kohlbie, Sep 17, 2009 08:07AM
I've been having severe chest pain... its like the whole chest cavity wants to explode..there is pain in the back right shoulder and severe pain in the chest right in the middle about 1/2 way between the sterum and collar bone.  The doctor that I have been to says that is acid refulx and put me on prilosec. But the problem is there is no acid... my thought and stomach are not buring with acid..  Sometimes the pain will go into the left shoulder too.  The doctor did do an ekg and said that my heart is fine.. I'm just wondering.. could I have a non functioning gall bladder?

It's possible it's a malfunctioning gallbladder, but if the doc thinks you've got acid reflux, why not ask to have an upper endoscopy done to check the state of your esophagus, stomach and duodenum. If you're having chest pain that is that severe, it would suggest your esophagus is compromised and I would think you might like to know what your 'starting state' is so that you'll be able to take all steps necessary to tamp down further damage to the esophagus - if, in fact, that's what's happening. If you're having esophageal spasms - which is what it sounds like - that typically indicates damage to the esophagus.
