Sharp pains in the rectum

Hi All,

I am a 28 year old male, 6'4" and 220 lb. I have a very good appetite and don't feel any particular symptoms of any sort of disease (e.g tiredness, loss of appetite or weight, nausea,...).
For a very long time (more than 10 years) I have had random sudden pains in my rectum. The pains are very sharp and I would be able to point with a finger the exact location where I am feeling them (fairly close to my anus, on the left side of the rectum).  I have always wondered what caused them but, since they were very rare and sporadic (maybe once every three months) and only lasted a few minutes I have never really worried about it. Last year due to a period where I was having some frequent stomach aches and fairly liquid stools my PCP suggested a sigmoidoscopy. The results were negative and the stomach ache as well as the diarrhea turned out to be a diet problem. The sigmoidoscopy also gave me peace of mind since no polips or cancer were found (therefore ruling that out as source of the sharp pains in the rectum).
In the last month I have started experiencing the same pain but with a much higher frequency (almost daily) and also noticed some constipation (which I think can be related to my diet over the past month).

My question for you is: should I be worried about this intensification of the pain frequency? The sigmoidoscopy ruled out any sort of cancer, what else could be causing them? I am planning on talking to my PCP about it, but it won't be until next year in August, when I have my yearly checkup. Do you guys think I should instead contact him right away about it?

Thank you all!

i had those pains for years.I believe it's called Protractus (?) Fugax. They were so severe I  thought  of pain killers would be a joke - until someone handed me one - immediate relief. They have long since disappeared but I still remember that rememdy.

The most common causes would be fissures or hemorrhoids.  These are not emergencies.  Try hemorrhoid cream.  Call the office if you want their recommendation for a good one. If you have constipation, it is very important to treat that and avoid hard stools.  Also it is important to keep the area clean.
