Should I be worried?

by lanas, Mar 22, 2002 12:00AM
I have a question that I would lvoe some input on--I have had problems all my life with constipation.  I am in my late 30s, F.  I can literally go 3 weeks without a bowel movement. Finally, when I do go, it is often with extreme initial pain, sometimes to the point of making me cry.  However, this is not always the way it is, but it often is.  I have a very good diet--so this is not the problem.  What I really want to know is should this concern me?  And if so, why?

3 weeks??? Once my bowels quit working becasue of some meds, and by the 9th day I was in so much pain and my stomache was so distended that I could barely move. If I was you I'd go to a doctor and get some treatment, the wastes will build up in your system and poison you. When I worked in the nursing home we used to give our residents suppositories or enemas if they didn't go for 3 days. Do you eat enough? Make sure to get plenty of fiber, water, and exercize. Also you can take metamucil. Don't rely on laxatives regularly as they will eventually cause bowel disfunction.

Have you had kids, and were there complications? I just found out that a rectocele can actually cause constipation. The most common cause is complications at childbirth. My youngest was 12 when my symptoms got bad. I too have a good diet, but have been plagued with this problem.

Yes, I have kids, but I have literally had this problem since I was small.  I don't think it is realted to having had children unless having had children has exacerbated it.  What do you do for the problem you have?

I have no choice but to use laxatives along with my high fiber diet. A rectocele (bulging of the rectal lining into the vagina) makes having a bowel movement difficult, and almost impossible when constipated. I also have other problems resulting from my epesiotomy and am probably going to have surgery soon. Good luck on your problem.
