Should I get second opinion for my liver

by TooManySurgeries, Jul 31, 2008 01:45AM
I am a 46-year-old female with numerous problems.  Two weeks ago I had my gallbladder removed after a bout with gallbladder attacks and finally pancreatitis.  They tried to do the surgery laparoscopically but I had over 400 stones and my gallbladder was very enlarged so the surgeon had to open me up.  The doctor said that this had been going on for quite some time.  I know that it was going on for at least a year because I had been to the ER several times and I knew that it was my gallbladder bothering me but the tests didn't show anything.  I am bloated all of the time like others and I get sharp pains in my LUQ.  The pain doesn't last very long and I will have a few close together and then none for awhile.  I am hoping it is gas or just still healing.  When I wake up in the morning my stomach is flat but as the day wears on it gets bloated and hard.  It makes no difference if I eat or not and activity makes no difference.  The longer I am awake, the worse it gets.  This was happening for at least a year prior to surgery also.

My surgeon told me that my liver was round and hard and full of nodules.  I had hepatitis at age 18.  It was referred to as "Non A-Non B".  I was told I got it from my ex-husband who was Vietnamese.  They said he was a natural carrier.  Anyway, I damaged 3/4 of my liver and although I was told many years later that it had regenerated, apparently it was still very damaged.  My family doctor told me that after the surgery my blood tests showed that my liver was working alright and not to worry.  I am afraid that my liver may have been the cause of my gallbladder and stones as they are not sure what caused it.  I do not eat a diet high in fat and my blood tests showed normal cholesterol, etc.  Should I take my doctor at his word or should I get another opinion?  I have been on some pretty strong narcotics due to other problems for over 10 years and I am afraid that they will do my liver in.  Doc says don't worry.

I also have diabetes X 1.5 years, had surgery to repair my esophagus after acid reflux, total hysterectomy, herniated discs in my back, myesthenia gravis, superventricular tachycardia and RLS.  In other words, I am screwed anyway. LOL  I just want to know if I should see a specialist about my liver.  Thank You very much...in advance.
