Should I give up on getting relief from GERD symptoms?

I am a 53 yo female with daily GERD/heartburn symptoms that are not being relieved with PPI treatment. I have had an EGD which came back as gastritis, esophagitis and hiatal hernia. Biopsies all came back negative. Negative for h pylori.  I also have an enlarged lliver and very slightly elevated liver enzymes. I have had burning pain in my stomach/chest for two months and have been on four PPI medications that have not relieved the symptoms at all. My primary care doctor simply shrugs his shoulders and tells me not to eat foods that bother me and to reduce stress.  OMG -- I am down to eating only a handful of foods and I don't think my stress level is any different than it was a year ago! I have lost 10 pounds (which is probably a good thing).  Any suggestions from those who have been there?

I will say I'm so sorry you are going through this! I'm sorry for all of us that do. I WILL say also that it took me being pro-active to find the PPI that worked for me. Have you tried all? and upped the doages? Keep going with narrowing the PPI's down that you have not been on and trying those. I know..I know...not help right now that will make you better but it worked for me, I mean I found 60 mil. of Prevacid was enough to keep me out of the Docs office. I'm still symptomatic and if I have a stress flare up? OMG! I feel like I'm not on ANY medication even when I'm taking it. I did fire that doc and found another one that I have an appointment with on the 14th! Keep us posted on what you find out. I also have GERD/REflux and a hiatus hernia.

Welcome to the gastroenterology community!  After only 2 months, you should definitely not give up on finding a treatment.  It doesn't seem like you gave each of the PPI's enough time to work if you were only on them for 2-3 weeks.  Also, there are different medications besides PPI's to try and you should find a doctor who is willing to work with you to find a treatment.
