Should I have testing for bile reflux?

by alvfer, Dec 08, 2002 12:00AM
I had a cholecystectomy last year and was also diagnosed witih sliding hiatal hernia and a small esophageal ulcer. I took nexium for a few months as suggested by my doctor, then stopped it (he also suggested trying to do without it and see how it went).

This year, after several months of doing apparently well, I developed a problem with horrible chest/epigastric pain, and eventually had a repeat endo, which showed barrett's esophagus, stage I.
My symptoms started in this order:
1. Bloated swollen stomach for no apparent reason. (not abdomen, higher in the epigastric stomach area)
2. Then developed PVC's, persistent and quardigeminy/trigeminy, heart ruled out with maximal TST and echo.
3. Chest pain with finally developing wheezing and pulmonary stridor. This apparently resulted from a severe reflux episode, and was the symptom that finally made me seek my doctor's attention.

I have had persistent pain which did not respond to PPI's 2x/day. I finally sought out a psychologist, who got me started on Sinequan.  The sinequan, interestingly, gave me **immediate** relief of my chest pain and PVC's. I did not feel panicked, nor do I have a history of panic reaction. I have been under terrific stress in my work, however.

My question is: should I have further evaluation for possible bile reflux to see if this is causing my problems?
If so, what kinds of tests should I have?

My doctor has kind of poo-poo'ed this as a less than serious problem, however I have concerns that if I have bile reflux, my esophagus problem will escalate into something more serious.

Suggestions?

I think you should follow your good instincts! If your doctor won't take your very legitimate concerns seriously, I hope you'll find another BETTER doctor who will!
