Slight acute irritation inside upper esophagus when drinking cold fluids...

by Dr. Jim, Dec 13, 2006 12:00AM
Brief:
37 yr old. 6'3 250lb male. Workout 4 days a week. Eat very healthy.
Slight anxiety disorder, treated .5mg Klonopin. Coagulative blood disorder, treated Sodium Warfarin.
Overall, a bit heavy....but active and healthy.
Moderate weekend beer drinker.  Cigar smoker (no intentional inhaling)

Normal weekend.
Noticed on monday that when I drank water, as in drinking down a whole glass, not just small drinks, I would get a slight stinging or slight 'raw'? feeling on the front side of my very upper esophagus.  This is in only a particular area, and not at all like a general 'sore throat' feeling.
Not at all intense or very painful, just enough to notice and be deemed an irritated or raw feeling.

Location is above and a few inches to right of center top of sternum. Not behind breastbone at all. I am guessing upper esophagus as opposed to throat since I am not sure where one ends and the other begins.  But it is definately up and to right above sternum, not in neck.

ONLY when drinking down cold water or liquid.  NO issues with eating or swallowing in general at all.  Never had heartburn in my life.  No other pain or discomfort anywhere.

This continued into tuesday.
Today it is about 70% better.....but still present a little.

I am guessing if it goes away to be done with it,...and if it continues through weekend to make a Dr's appt?

Any ideas of opinions/insight would be appreciated.
Nothing I have found on the web has any sort of symptom like this, and I have no other symptoms of any of the other esophageal issues.

Esophageal spasms can be considered.

An upper GI series, barium swallow or upper endoscopy would be the tests to consider to evaluate this condition.

If these tests are negative, more specialized testing, including a 24-hr pH study or esophageal motility studies can be considered.

Calcium channel blockers, TCAs and trazodone have been shown in small studies to be helpful if this is the case.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
