Slow Grastric Emptying

by Mary__0__0, Oct 07, 1998 12:00AM

I have intermittent slow gastric emptying.  How long does it take for Propulsid to help?  Could a person just use it "on demand", or does one have to take it on a daily basis?
  Thank you,
  Mary

Dear Mary,
propulsid usually produces an evident effect after several days of treatment.  Although the severity of gastroparesis symptoms can vary, most doctors will treat indefinitely with a prokinetic agent, assuming there are no side effects.  Once your symptoms improve, your dosage should be reduced to the lowest that controls symptoms.
Propulsid is associated with cardiac arrythmias, although the cardiac effect is usually seen in people who take Propulsid in conjunction with other medications e.g. antibiotics, antidepressants etc.  When a physician wants to describe a new medication you should inform the doctor that you take Propulsid.
This information is presented for educational purposes.  Always consult your personal physician for specific medical questions.
