Spasms in Throat or esophogaus

by jakey2, Feb 25, 2008 09:18PM
Hi, I have just turned 37 and I am a female. I am in general good health with the exception of being 40 pounds over weight.
For about 8 to 9 years now I have experienced what feels like throat contractions or spasms.  At times they feel like spasms in my throat, or esophagus or lower esophagus.  When what feels like a spasms occurs, I tend to respond with a small cough.   If feels like something twitches, or closes, or generally again, what would be described as a spasms sensation, my chest does not hurt, but sometimes I freak myself out thinking its heart related despite all the test taken in the past.   In these past 8 to 9 years I have had several test, EKG's, 24hr heart monitors,  Barrium Swallow, Chest xrays, heart xray, blood test, urine test, all my test come back normal.   Over the past years these symptoms are not daily, but happen occassionally and its difficult for me to pin point the reason.  However, in the last three months, they seems to be occuring more regularly, and at this point for the past 4 days.  At one point my doctor gave me prilosec for what she thought was acid reflux.  Yesterday I bought some more, and I can't tell if they are working yet.

With that being the history, my question are these...
What could be causing these odd symptoms
Are these symptoms of GERD? Acid Reflux? Esophogeal spasms?
What can be done to relieve what feels like spasms?

Thank you.
