Spasms

by Jub, Jan 09, 2003 12:00AM
I have the following symptoms and would like your comments.  I feel what initially felt like an extra or irredular heartbeat.  The heart doctor said everything looks fine after an examination.  He said what I was describing sound like the classic extra beat that comes with stress and I should not worry about that unless it became much worse.  I continued to feel what felt like this "hard" or "extra" beat or feeling around my heart area and also considered it to be a gastro problem.  I noticed the "feeling" occured after meals and while I was seated at my desk.  The episodes would sometimes happen every five to ten minutes throughout the day and then go away for several days only to return.  I visited the Gastro doctor and he said it could be a spastic colon and he did a scope down the throat and only found mile acid reflux with a small hyattle hernia (sp.)  He gave me some medication to take (protonix) after I felt such symptoms and I have been taking that since.  Has anyone had any experience with such?

Hi, I had similar symtoms with my heart, heart tests were OK, the dr. took blood tests and discovered my thyroid was underactive.  Thyroxin has corrected the problem, though I still get the occasional skipped beat.  Another thing that caused funny beats in me is low blood sugar. It is important to eat regular well balanced meals.

Hey Jub:  You hit the spot!  Sorry, but his thread will be long, hope you don't mind.
I've had indigestion problems for years.  I'm a 40 yrs old male battling another onset of bad indigestion plus irregular heart beats; skips and palpitations.  I had an uncomfortable bout with this years ago and minor ones here and there, but I got it majorly again for about two weeks now.  I guess I was due for one sooner or later.

My symptoms goes like this: I'll start to feel queezy in my stomach (acidic, nausea, bloating)and the feeling start to overwhelm my entire body (like feeling anxiety or in a panic state).  I usually head to the bathroom feeling that I'm about to explode, but I'll either move a littel bowel or none.  Then as I sit on the throne, anxiety kicks in full blown and my heart starts to race.  I'm feeling my pulse on my neck at this time and start to panic because I'm feeling skips and pauses.  I head to a sofa or my bed, situp and take some deep breaths to come myself down.  The entire episode lasts for about 10 minutes, then my heart slow down, but my stomach still feels bad.  I do believe that some GI problems, like ours, is attributed to stress and what we eat.  It also causes our heart rhythm to go wild!

I don't get this full blown attack all the time, but when it comes, it comes!  I don't know how long I'll have it full blown.  I just have to be patient and wait till my system is back to normal.  I've lost about 10 pounds over two weeks because I can't eat comfortably.  I just eat a little bit of soft foods and drink lots of liquids.  What helps me is to take Gaviscon when I start to feel the symptoms. The Gaviscon calms my stomach down.

Do you get the spasmic feeling in your stomach when it's happening?  The spasmic feeling happens when the heart is skipping too.  It feels really uncomfortable at times.  It's also uncomfortable to "expand" my stomach when I feel this....feels like someone is pushing pressure on my stomach.

I heard that this isn't serious and it's basically from stress, but I'm thinking that I should go see a Gastro to do some tests for peace of mind.  I've seen a Gastro about 12 years ago with the same symptoms and my tests were all good.  He said I had Gastritis at the time.  I've also seen a Cardiologist for the irregular heart rhythms and I've tested fine too.

It's miserable right now, but I have to deal with until it goes!

Let me know if your symptoms are similar to mines!

Robinbobin,  Do you get a bloated feeling after meals; big and small?  Do you get irregular heartbeats? My stomach is fine while sleeping, but starts up again as soon as I wake up.  I guess it's stress related.  I heard a health radio talk show this past weekend and they've discussed IBS.  They said that this natural supplement is suppose help you out; 98%.  It's called Bowel Soothe.  You can get it via www.bowelsoothe.com.  I've ordered some and will be trying it out.  I'll keep a post on how it's working.
