Spontaneous perforation of colon, info needed.

by fundino, Nov 06, 2001 12:00AM
Performed very heavy lifting in July. Next day, much back and some abdominal pain noted. (Bad back since 1988). Abdominal pain
increased daily for 2 more days until admission thru local ER was
necessary. Diagnosis: Acute sigmoid diverticulitis w/ severe
peritoneal infection.
I am 44 yr old, 5'10", 145lbs, WM w/ decent (not perfect) diet in otherwise very good health. Was told by surgeon that I had "few" diverticulae, and in fact, it was a "clean" section of colon which developed a "pinhole". Have been told that spontaneous perforation is extremely rare and am seeking any info that might
link this problem to heavy-lifting episode that immediately pre-
ceded. My surgeon insists there is no possible relation.
Had resection done and temp. colostomy reversed 2 weeks ago and
am on my way to a full recovery (Thank God), But am out approx.
$70,000 in medical expenses and lost wages if I cannot make the
obvious (to me) connection between this problem and heavy lifting
at work.
I would be extremely grateful if anyone could provide any info or
help with this problem. Thank you in advance.

the fact is if you have a few or many diverticulas one or more has the potential to perforated i just had colon resection for extensive and severe diverticulitis disease. the lifting may or may not have aided in the perforation there is no real way of desiding that sense they can very well do it on their own by the diverticula in the colon wall becomming to thin, thus causing the perforation .i am glad to here you are doing well and that you do not have to use the bag any longer. that in it's self is a blessing.( some are not so blessed ).i wished i had better news for you .i do believe if the area was weak that the heavy lifting you were doing  could have aided in peforation, but no doubt you will have to get an attorney to prove that for you, and if you doctor is insisting that it is not possible then it may be hard to prove. also you may want to ask him if it is so rare why  did it rupture .my question is how large were the few diverticulas you had ? the fact is you need legal advice on this  unless you get an attorney to look in to this for you your chances are slim to none .god bless, and good luck .mary ann
