Starting to believe there really is no help...

by jwm1974, Sep 07, 2008 08:56PM
For two years I have been living with really nasty gas.  I have always been a gasey person, but about two years ago it took on a whole new phase.  Nothing in particular happened that I can think of.  I just started to get really gasey every day after I ate lunch.  I could eat whatever I wanted for Breakfast and snack, but as soon as lunch was over I would blow up.  This is what happens... and still does...

Eat lunch - doesn't really seem to matter what it is
Gas builds up
Stomach distends and pants get really tight.
Feel gas bubbles popping around in my guy (usually below my belly button)
If cannot relieve myself becuase at work then I wait until I leave.
At first when I release the gas it is just air, no real smell, but then between 4-7 or 8 it is all over.  Sulphur, egg smelling, nasty gas.  My intestines/gut feels all inflamed.  Around 8 it will start to calm down and I am usually fine all night until the next afternoon.

I have tried -
testing for allergies
seeing a gi dr - he said it was probably small bacterial overgrowth and to avoid eating gasey foods
the elimination diet.  seemed to work when i was not eating anything, but not one thing seemed to be the cause of it
taking digestive enzymes and probiotics.

Also, it seems to get a lot worse with sugar of any kind - especially fruit.  But then again some days I am perfectly fine and can eat anything I want.

Also - when all this started I also started getting irregular periods.  When my periods are off the symptoms seem to be worse.  And they are much worse two weeks before I start my period, which is now about 4 weeks because I have started going 60 days between cycles.

I believe there is a connection between all this.  When my periods are regular every couple months my digestive issues also seem to calm down.

I don't know what to do anymore.  It seems no doctor has an answer or really even cares at all.

Anything thoughts, suggestions, comments???

Thanks for thinking about this.

I don't know how old you are, but have you considered taking birth control to regulate your periods? I know this isn't an answer, but it sounds like your digestive symptoms are much better when your period is regular. At least it might give you some comfort until you can find the right doctor to figure this out!

My situation is so similar to yours!  I feel your pain!  I know it has been a long time since you posted this thread, but I just joined the forum.  Have you had any success?  I am so miserable.  I don't understand why I am OK in the morning and a mess after lunch.  If you're still searching for answers, maybe we can help each other out...

Hi, I'm a nutritionist.  I have seen this problem before.  It is usually a result of an imbalance in the intestinal flora in your gut.  The biggest tell tale sign is if the problem is worse after eating sugar of any kind, even fruit.  Sugar ferments in your intestines  if you don't have enough good, probiotic bacteria.  Because sugar feeds the bad, harmful bacteria.  This is what I would do if I were you....Get the book, "The Bible Cure for Candida and Yeast Infections" by Dr. Don Colbert.  It's a tiny book that is really easy to read.  Follow the instructions in it. (You can probably purchase it from Dr. Don Colbert's web site if you can't find it in a book store)  And stop eating all forms of sugar, even fruit.  Also stop eating fermented foods like bread made with yeast (yeast-free bread is fine), vinegar, pickles, etc.  They also feed the bad bacteria.  Get Dr. Colbert's book, "What Would Jesus Eat" and start eating the way he recommends you to eat in that book.  Also start taking a probiotic each day.  The best one on the market is Primal Defense by Garden of Life.  Follow the directions on the label.   Also, buy Activated Charcoal capsules for the gas symptoms if you haven't already.  You may need to take as many as 5 at a time to get relief.  If you change your diet and start taking the probiotic and you don't get relief (although I believe you will) go and see Dr. Colbert in person.  He is a brillant holistic doctor and he's in Florida.  Good Luck!

Garden of Life also makes a digestive enzyme called "Omega-Zyme"  I would recommend that too.  And remember, when you cut out all fermented foods, cheese is a fermented food too.

just posted under gastroenterology my success with this type of yeast related stomach pain and my relief was provided by my Chinese acupuncturist who told me I had "too much yeast" and gave me Chinese herbal medication, Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Wan, mine is by Millenia.  It has been over a year with no pain until this last weekend when 2 glasses of red wine with dinner set me off again.  I now have another bottle of medication to take.  There are 200 pills that you take 3 times a day, 8 pills at a time, till gone.

One thing I forgot to mention...It is also possible that you could be suffering from too little hydrocholic acid production in your stomach.  If I were you I would go see a Holistic Medical Doctor as soon as possible.  Traditional doctors are not good at testing or treating yeast problems and hydrochloric acid problems.  Try to find a good Holistic doctor.  Not a new age one.  One that has hospital privilages would be good.  I'm certain that such a doctor can help you.  God bless!!

Before you do any of the things I mentioned above..I highly recommend you do this..Find a holistic doctor who does a test called a Heidelberg Gastrogram (google this).  If I were you, I would have all the test a traditional Gastroenterologist recommends.  If he does not find the cause, get this test done even it you must travel out of state.  I really think it will tell the tale as to what is wrong with you and I'm sorry I didn't mention it first.

It sounds like a yeast overgrowth problem.  See a holistic dr and have him check you for yeast.  Also, buy the book, The Body Ecology Diet, by Donna Gates.  Just ignore the chapter on eating right for your blood type.  This theory has never been proven and most nutritionist's don't believe it is valid.  And try taking Activated Charcoal capsules for the gas.

I too fell your pain. I was fine until last summer. I had taken aciphex for reflux for 2 months. That resolved but terrible gas started. I am fine until after lunch. I can eat whatever I want for breakfast and I am fine. Red wine is a huge problem and I use to drink this all the time!!! If I take 3 beano and acidophilius before lunch and dinner it seems to help, but if I miss it watch out. I go to other rooms in my house so I can be alone!!!  I don't go out in the afternoons much anymore either and I am scared to death to try to go out to dinner. I am going to look into this yeast thing.  what I don't understand is why this just suddenly happened. I think the aciphes triggered something since it changed the ph in my stomach, but that should be back to nrmal now you would think. I am going to a GI doctor in a few weeks and can let you know an update. Maybe you could let me know if you find out anything too.
