Still dark urine......more tests.......can these test results be wrong ?

by anxious boy, Dec 16, 2002 12:00AM
following on from my earlier posting titled "dark urine, tan stools etc...." below on the 12th of December. I have been to see my Gastro again and told him I want some answers to my concerns. Primary concern being my urine is darkening unless I am 'super-hydrated' and has been doing so for about 4 months with no answers as to its cause. (For more background, please read my earlier posting) but in short...I have had 3 negative results for Hep C (two anti-body tests, and one RNA by PCR test)and 3 consistantly normal enzyme levels although my doc says that infact my bilirubin was very mildly elevated, but not enough to be getting into the urine and was nothing to cause concern. He is testing me for other possible causes as suggested by CP such as auto immune markers in the blood and is sending me for another ultra-sound....specifically on the liver.

What I really want to know is, what is the chance, if any, of the negative results being wrong at three different laboratories. He has reassured me, this is extremely unlikely.

I have tested negative for porphyrins and have had Ulcerative Colitis for about 5 years.

I may also post this in the Hepatitis forum to get an idea from people who have actually been diagnosed.

This is a fantastic forum and wish I had know about it years ago.

Best wishes to all of you.

Most insurance companies allow a second opinion with another GI doctor. The doctor makes all of the difference! My daughter and I didn't get anywhere with a GI doctor and then I took her to a naturopathic doctor that was referred from the Great Smokies Diagnostic Lab and we are finally getting somewhere.  Good Luck!

I also had/have a bit dark urine, orange/brown.
Was scared, since I had gallstones and measured
bilirubin, which was positive with some dipsticks
but negative with others.
Blood bilirubin and AP was slightly elevated sometimes,
normal some other times.
I assume there is something else in the urine which triggers
the bilirubin dipsticks, no idea what it is, though.

It is often lighter when the urine is alcaline or when I
take omeprazole (PPI) and darker when I eat beans.
But even when it's light, the bilirubin dipstick
still becomes orange, not exactly the color on the cover,
but still different from normal.

can you try the omeprazole, just one or two pills ?
Should have no side-effects.
I'm interested whether it changes your color.
I found this nowhere, neither internet nor
the documentation.
