Stomach Hardening & Bowel Problems

I had my gallbladder removed over 2 years ago and since I have had nonstop stomach cramps whenever I eat or drink anything, my stomach also goes hard and swells, especially hardens if I sit or lie down,  I also have really bad constipation, anyone have any ideas as I have all my Drs baffled. Thanks Trish

Trish, sounds like you need to have some medical detective work done. It would probably be a good idea to run some labs - a food sensitivity panel and a complete GI stool test which checks all types of gut function and tests for the presence of parasites and other pathogens. Regular MDs don't run these - you would have to go to a functional medicine practitioner. Ping me if you want to know more.

Hi Rougesandy, thats sound like a good idea, I'll see if I can find a Dr to agree to run these tests, they have done many test MRI, CTs, Xrays, Ultrasounds and many blood & stool test as I also contraced Rota Virus while in hospital one time, but don't recall them testing for sensitivity, parasites or pathogens. Thanks for the Advice

Hi Shermay, I am currently on a Low Fat/Calorie diet but it doens't seem to make much difference what I eat, even eating fruit & vegetables makes my stomach go hard and swell, and even with the Low Calorie diet my weight won't go down, but by the end of the day my stomach is so swollen it looks like I'm 9 months pregnant.

When I had mine taken out approx. 2 years ago also, I followed a very strict low fat diet  - and I still do.  What type of diet are you on?

Thanks for that, yes I had gallstones, and also my food is undigested when passed, but I dont have floating stools, and its no matter what I eat or drink, even a glass of water causing swelling and pain, they thought it was IBS but none of the symptoms fit and none of the medications help, so the Drs have pretty well given up on me and are just pumping me full of pain killers which certainly does not help the constipation so I don't tend to take them very often.

I have tried Naturpaths and Iridolgist and taken heaps of IBS and Suppliments to help but it seems everything I take just seems to make it much worse. I have tried all sorts of diets from Gluten Free to Dairy Free with no difference and am litterally at my whits end with all of this. Especially as its worse when I lay down of a night so sleeping's not a great option, but thanks so much for you helpful advice.

Trish, I'm assuming you had gallstones?

My hunch is that it's not just an effect of not having a gallbladder, but also, whatever caused you to get stones in the first place is also causing other problems.

Sounds like you may have developed some food sensitivities that is causing inflammation, also maldigestion (probably undigested fats) may be causing some bloating. Do you have tan colored, floating stools?

I had my gallbladder out too, and had similar symptoms, except I had chronic diarrhea instead of constipation. No matter what I ate, I would blow up painfully - I looked pregnant. Except I would give birth to gas. Just like you, my doctors couldn't help me. They also never told me that there is a slight increase in colon cancer risk, or that I could develop nutritional deficiencies, from not having a gallbladder.

After about 15 years of dealing with digestive problems, I ended up helping myself with food, some specific supplements, and lifestyle changes. It no longer bothers me, and I haven't had to take imodium in over 2 years.  Let me know if you want to know more.
