Stomach Pain

by Kat, Oct 22, 1999 12:00AM
I have been experience a minor pain on my left side under my rib cage. It has been coming and going for the past two months. I have been diagnosed with depression which causes me to worry exstensively. I have had other stomach problems in the past, but the docters couldn't find anything wrong. I also have a history of alcohol abuse (I know, not the smartest thing for a depressed person). I hate to keep going to the doctor everytime there is an ache or pain, I feel like I may over reacting. This pain does not feel like acid or gas. More like something is inflammed. I am concerned that I may have something seriously wrong with me, but don't know if I even have symptoms of anything. There is no fever, occasional loose bowels but not bad, no blood. I also have been going through a lot of life changes lately which have been very stressful. I am on no medication.
Questions, What coluld this pain be and at what point should I be seriously worried?

by HFHSm.D.-Gastro-rf, Oct 31, 1999 12:00AM
Dear Kat,
My suggestion is for you to speak with your primary physician.  This individual should have baseline information about your health as well as noting any changes.  Reassurance may be forthcoming based on the evaluation.  If you do not have a primary doctor, you should find one.  It is not a good idea for an individual to diagnose their own complaints.

Best of luck

I believe that you have a peptic ulcer.I've been having those symptoms, and my doctor has told me it was an ulcer. It can cause your stomach to burn.Does your stomach burn after you eat?Or is the burning relieved by eating?Do you feel nauseated at times? You should go to the doctor(preferably a gastroenterologist)and have them check you out.

Kat-

It sounds like you are having stress-related symptoms. It is most likely being caused by acid reflux and/or gas even though you think it doesn't feel like acid reflux. Are you still drinking any alcohol? If you are, that may be part of the problem. Caffeine will also contribute. If you have already been worked up by a physician, you can probably rest assured that stress and anxiety is the underlying cause. If you can avoid alcohol and caffeine, you will be two steps ahead. If you cannot give up the caffeine and alcohol, you should try to accept that your symptoms are not serious and will not hurt you. Your mind is very powerful and can make you think that there is something wrong with you even after your doctor has examined you and given you a clean bill of health. You may want to talk to a Psychiatrist if you haven't already done so. It has worked for me. Don't worry, be happy. Good luck!

You could be experiencing mild pancreatitis. Alcohol abuse by itself can cause this, and stress will only aggravate the condition.  Talk to your Dr.
Good luck

I had some sort of attack this afternoon, which scared me so, that I had my neighbor come to take me to the hospital.
We didn't make it there, as after about 30 minutes after it started, it slowly subsided. Don't know what it was, but my mom though it might be gallstones, as most of her sisters had their gall bladder removed, ans she was familiar with the symptoms.
My whole abdomen was cramping, so much so that it hurt to breathe, or straighten up.  I have had a very busy stressful couple of weeks, and have been not eating right...eating on the run..mostly fast food. (I know..bad girl )
While I was hurting this afternoon, there was pain and pressure
around my bottom as well as my entire abdomen.  I will ask the
doctor next time I'm there...or sooner if it should happen again
Whaddya think...hmmm?
Thanks in advance for your responses.
Cheers,
Steff

My 14 year old daughter is experiencing a lot of stomach pain and is missing a lot of school because of it. We have been to the Dr. several times and they don't seem to know what is wrong. The pains come from know where at times and are stronger after she eats any type of foods. can someone give me any suggestions? A few years ago I was diagnosed with Crohnes Disease is it possible that she could develop it? Thank You for any suggestions or answers.

by Susan, Nov 09, 1999 12:00AM
Dear Kat:

Because the pain you desribe is so high a possibility may be gall bladder.  You need to follow up on this - call your local hospital for referrals in your area.  Ask or suggest the following tests - endosopy - small bowel series and colonoscopy.  If you have any imflammation as you speculate you will know for sure after these tests.  A simple blood test measuring your sed rate (imflamation) will also serve as a motivator for these tests, if the imflammation is high.

Take care of yourself - you are your own healer first!

by Susan, Nov 09, 1999 12:00AM
Dear Bert:

I too have a 16 year old son (who is now in the hospital) and I have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease years ago so yes it can happen.  The doctors think it may be related by ethnics rather than heredity but no one really knows.

My son has been seriously ill since last May - he was diagnosed 5 years ago with ulcerative colitis and was treated with prednisone and asacol which always worked in the past.  This time he was not recovering, was hospitalized in August with IV steroids and flagile but was only good for about a week.  He has lost 50 lbs. since May and is deteriorating quickly not to mention depressed.  He is being home tutored because he couldn't make it to school.  I secured the name of another specialist in our area because his doctor was hesitant to put him on 6 mp because it takes 3 months or more to begin working and he wanted to get this event under control first.  The new gastro admitted him to the hospital and I finally got him to start running more tests.  Now they're saying he has Crohn's colitis (even his old doctor but never shared that with us) and the doctor is considering Remicaid infusion ( or Infliximab) which is basically an antibody which reduces the imflammation to nothing quickly.

To start off with your daughter I would suggest a blood test to measure the imflammation(sed rate).  If it is high graduate from there.  A colonoscopy, small bowel series and possibly an endiscope if the small bowel series is indicating imflammation or disease.  Since they use the same type of anesthesia for the colonoscopy and the endoscopy I would suggest having them done at the same time just so you don't have to submit your daughter to anesthesia twice.

Don't wait any longer - over time your daughter can develop other problems such as depression and eating disorder because she relates eating to pain.  It is not pleasurable any longer so she may avoid food.

You and your daughter will be in my prayers.  How is your Crohn's doing now?  Are you under a doctor's care or are you in remission?  I have been for 5 years now since my last surgery - pretty much pain free but diarreah (which is manageable) and no meds for 4-1/2 yrs.

by Linda, Nov 13, 1999 12:00AM
My symptoms book says it is most likely an ulcer also... possibly GERD...Reflux, best get seen by doctor won't go away without help...could have H-Pylori virus which will need an anti-biotic, zantac and or prilosec...

i have had a hernia removed from my neighbor over six months ago when i went to the doctor one of several visits for severe abdomial (abdominal) pain, then the pain came back and i had my gallbladder removed, now the same pain has returned and my primary physician gave me vicodin until my insurance would approve for me to see a specialist which took over three weeks.i'm going to the doctor finally today and the pain is still there it is a burning sensation in the middle of my stomach.i'm a fifty two year old military person who has done quite a bit of drinking in my lifetime but have cut down the past three years.the pain stops for about one hour when i've taken pepcid or maalox or gavaison but returns stronger and wakes me during the night with severe burning.i have also been given meds for possible acid reflex and have gotten relief with that problem.the pain at this point i sometime think is bubbling feeling and then burning.i have even gotten up during the night to drink cold water due to the burning senstaion.

I work in a local pizza shop the other day i sneezed and my side started hurting like i had pulled a muscle now if I lay wrong or lift something it hurts to the belly button should i see a physician or try to strengthen that muscle

I too have been getting pain under my left rib cage after I
eat a moderate amount of food. I'v had Abdominal ultrasounds,
abdominal cat scan and a Hitus Scan (gallbladder).  It was
determined that my gallbladder is not working well. However,
the surgeon said the gallbladder is not causing my left pain.
Today a gastrologist performed an endoscopy (down my
throat checking out my stomach ect.)  He prescribed prilosic
and said I may have gastritus.  I am trying to get this resolved
Hope this helps you.  Do you have any new news or developments?

by claude, Jan 21, 2000 12:00AM
I been having severe stomach pains, for about a week or so.  I would like to know what might be causing this pain.  I'm not taking any medicaton at the moment, but I would like some more information on this matter.  In adition, I took a laxative a few days ago, which cleaned out my system, but I still feel the pain getting worse.

by kitten squirrel, Jan 24, 2000 12:00AM
Kat,i have the same problem...with feeling bloated ,let me know if you find out what it is...

by Joseph, Jan 30, 2000 12:00AM
Kat, your symptoms are very similar to mine.  Pancreatic problems can cause depression (physiologically) and present ULQ pain like you describe.  Mine still unresolved.  Would be interested in what you find out.  Good luck and thanks.

the pain is on my right side sometimes lower sometimes a little higher, i do not drink. i have had stomach problems since i was a kid. also have a lot of stress i lost husband three years ago from cancer and have a six year old son to raise.

I have had pain on the right lower side of my stomach sometimes a little higher. It is not a pain that is severe by anoying it also does not last all day but comes periodically.  when i press my stomach i do not feel pain or any hardness or lumps.  i was diagnosed with IBS a while ago but this feels more like a tugging or pulling. Also under a lot of stress. Could it be goldbladder or ovarian cysts.  Had a check up in Dec. with pap smear and showed nothing. Also alot of bleching constantly. Had colenoscopy in summer of 1999 showed nothing.

by RF, Feb 01, 2000 12:00AM
i have been having pain in my lower right side sometimes a little higher.  the pain is not a pain that is severe but more annoying.  It comes and goes.  I was diagnosed with IBS a while ago but i don't feel that this is that.  Had pap smear done two months ago. it was negative.  had colenoscopy in the summer of 1999 also negative. Could pain be gallbadder or something that i should really worry about.  I lift my son on my legs and wrestle with him he is six years old and weights 85 pounds, could this be some sought of sprain???

I have the same simptoms with the alcohol abuse but also I smoke too many cigarettes.  My pain is under my rib cage and I constantly spit up something like gull it is all foamy.  I take blood pressure pills and am taking wellebrutin to stop smoking and to relieve my anxiety.  It hasn't helped with the smoking.

I am 71 year old woman, I recently had surgery,  now have severe
upper stomach problems, lack of appetite, dry metalic taste in
mouth, periodic flem (phlegm), weakness.  I have tried mylanta, pepcid,
perlosec, all with not much help.  Pain pills help, but I think
irritate the problem.  One year/half ago I had upper/lower GI
diagnosis gastritis& reflux.  This problem has happened after
2 surgeries.  I have lost so much weight due to inability to
eat (I have to force myself to eat). My stomach feels so sore.\
If anyone has any suggestions or similar experience I appreciate
your help.

I have a stamach pain that when I eat something I always vomit it up and i try to loose bowel but i cant i dont want to eat anything because I feel sick.

by Dana Britton, Feb 22, 2000 12:00AM
It sounds like what you are experiencing is extremely similar to what I am feeling.  Have you found any answers?  My pain seems to be after drinking which I also do too much, and dor the same reasons.  I have had this pain somewhat since I was 16, and the doctors say there is nothing there. I seems that my ribs are jabbing into something. The pain is worsend cosiderably if I drink and have sex.  I am also worried and feel the doctors see me as a hypochondriac.  I was asked to have a lower gi done which I have not yet.  I also have ibs.  But today I am in sever pain, and after my hangover wears off, I will see a doctor tommorrow.  I also have low blood suger.  We girls need take better care of ourselves.

Hello- how are you? I was looking through these articles and yours stood out. For the past 3 weeks, i keep getting these stomach pains and it's bad. After i eat is worse and when i don't eat. Sometimes, there's pressure in my chest (near my heart) and it's all gas. I'm afraid it's something serious, that's why i'm trying to find out what these symptoms are (before the doctor tells me).

I HAVE THESE PAINS EVERY DAY I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY COULD BE

by Prentice Weaver, Mar 18, 2000 12:00AM
I have sharp pains occasionally on the left side of my abdomin (abdomen),
this condition started last night after I started using amoxicillin for a cold that was developing. I have asthma, so
when I feel the on set of a cold or when I produce yellow sputum
that's when I start the antibiotics to prevent further infection, at which time I'll need Corticosteriods to control my asthma. Is it possible that I could be developing an alergic (allergic) reaction to augmentin, now causing the occasional shooting pain or could this be the symptoms of something else, and if so what
other condition has similar characteristics? I have no other
symptoms like fever, blood in stool, diarrhea or headache.

Thank You
PW

I'm a 44 yo male . About a year ago, after my third cup of coffee one morning, I started to feel cramps in
my stomach. A couple of weeks later, after some sleepless
nights ( the cramps seemed to occur early in the morning as well as between meals ) I was diagnosed with gastritis and
given 20 mg of Prilosec for 3 weeks.

I've stopped the coffee and watch what I eat although I can't say that my life is any less stressfull right now.

There are times when, even with the prilosec, I can hear
and feel acid ( at least I think it's acid ) being
squirted into my stomach, particularly between meals., (
When I detect this happening, I pop about 4 tums and that usually takes care of it. Biut to have to do this 10 times a day is probably not good for my health.

The problem seemed to end but a few months later, the same symptoms reoccurred.

So I went on Prilosec again.  Now I am on 20 mg per day and I take 3 or 4 tums 10 times a day when I feel any
discomfort. The tums and bismol seem to do as much good as
the prilosec but I'm concerned about 2 things :
1) Is all of the calcium in the tums or other calcium based antacids going to cause other problems
2) Is the problem ( gastritis ) ever going to be
cured ?

There seems to be some pressure right under my sterum when the discomfort occurs. Could this be a symptom of GERD ?

Thanks.

my son is 14 years old. he has had stomach pains for about one year now.  we have been to the doctor and have had no answers.  he has pain, diarrahea and cramps.  he can eat most things and it doesn't affect him. we stopped milk for a while because we thought it was milk caused.  he is now taking aciphex and no big change.  amonia-ad and pepcaid-ac will also help some. any ideas about what causes it?

by Lindsay, Apr 08, 2000 12:00AM
I was recently diagnosed with pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas. Check with your doctor about a blood test to check for high levels of amalayse which will give him an idea of where to go from there. This is a potentially serious disease, so make sure you act quickly. Incidently, it is commonly caused by alcohol abuse.

a few months ago, i noticed a "lump" on the right side of my bellybutton.  it's about as round as a golf ball but only sticks out less than an inch.  i feel constant pressure inside all around the middle of my belly.  i've had many blood tests done as well as an ultrasound and a CT scan (with contrast...ugh!).  each has come back "normal" except for the ultrasound showing i had an elongated gall bladder which the doc said shouldn't be a cause for concern (should it be??).  this has been going on for a while now.  i'm always drained for energy, i'm hungry but then as soon as i sit down to eat i completely lose my appetite and feel nauseous.  i can't sleep on my stomach anymore and now i have to wear loose fitting pants.  my stomach always looks bloated or swollen and even a hug from ny fiance can be too much pressure sometimes.  i'm tired of being dismissed by the medical "professionals" and i'm also tired of being treated like some kind of science experiment.  every time i go to the doctor she brings in all her doctor friends and they all push on my stomach and then have a chat about me in the hallway.  can anyone help me?

by Karen J. Seppa, Apr 29, 2000 12:00AM
Erin, It sounds as if you aren't scheduled for any further tests or specialists. If this is so and they expect you to just go on like this there is only one thing you MUST DO - GET A NEW DR. It's very obvious SOMETHING is there that shouldn't be, and if it is causing you this pain you can't just settle for "oh well."   Do it.  -Karen

i have the identical symtoms and it is very painful.  It started with taking anti-inflamatory drugs and drugs that are used to build bone mass.  I've had liver, gallbladder and a lot of blood  tests and all to no avail.  Thi morning I had an upper GI and hope they will find something.  The test will show an ulcer or hiatal hernia.  A sister-in law- of mine told me she took the same type of medication years ago and it gave her an infection of the stomach lining which lasted for 3 months.  Go back to your doctor and let hime know what kind of drugs or over the counter medication you are taking.  Good luck.

I also at times have pain in my left side. The same thing thatKat has said on October 22, 1999 has said the same.
Question, What could this pain be coming from, I am 49 yrs. old.

by patrick, Aug 23, 2000 12:00AM
I have been having the same pain as you discribed above and Im being diagnosed with iritable bowl syndrom (syndrome) witch has no treatment and is said to be coused by stress. Whats funny is that I do not feel as if I have stress at all. My pain is on the lower left side of my body below my ribes and seems to come and go every day or every other day.The pain revels itself as a burning sinsation that seems to have a mind of its own as far as intensity goes. Its very painfule at times and ice cold water gives me relief but for a very short period of time. I am a smoker about a 1/2 pack a day and my pian started about 2 years back. Before the pain started I was drinking alot of pepsi and hardly any water I was also only eating one large meal a day becouse I just did not have the hunger in the mornings or afternoons. The docters have no answers  and I have gone threw a multitude of painful tests as well as being exposed to alote of radiation frome their cat scans and so forth. Sorry I have no answers for you but good luck!!!!!!

I know what you are feeling.  I have the same pain in my upper abdomen.  It feels like a wave of burning pain.  I dont have a history of drinking but when I do drink it seems to get worse.  I can't help you as far as telling you what you have but they think that the problem with me is Gastritis.  Inflammation of the stomach linning.  I have been having this problem for about 2 months and so far all they (when I say they I mean my Doctors) tell me to do is to take Tylenol instead if any type of IBU.

I have been having alot of pain in my stomach, I recently had a
gall bladder surgery, now i am having the same problems last than six months, with the exact same problem. I also had a ultra sound and endoscopy. I was told that I had alot of gastritis Inflamation (inflammation) in the stomach. I haven't been able to eat, I do eat small portions, I did have diahrae for about a week I am just always feeling neusea all the time its like a 24 hr thing, i don't know what to think what is going on with me. I am not really scared if it could be cancer, I am praying that it is not. I am waiting now for the biospy to come, I have appt with the doctor, because he wants to see me in 1 to 2 weeks, he said I had alot of inflamation (inflammation). Could it be something else than cancer?

Have had similar pains to the ones described.  Try avoiding ALL dairy.  I have found a sudden intolerance to dairy which leads to gas and severe stomach pain.  I too have IBS and stress is a major factor.  I have found I can control the stomach pain (for the most part) if I avoid stress and stay completely way from the dairy.  Good luck-Beth

I have the exact same thing, a pain in my stmach just above my   waist line a little ti the left, and I notice it after eating especially. I do not drink and I have not been worried lately. Any advice?

by Joyce, Sep 29, 2000 12:00AM
I really don't know, but I'm having very savere pains.I'm really scared it might be a cancer, because cancer runs in my family.I went to the doctor, and they said it wasn't a peptic ulcer, and it wasn't my gallstones,so I don't know what to think.I was looking on the internet,to talk to someone, about it.I'm really feeling lonly right know, and it's really stressful.I was reading, about the outcome,of this type of cancer, and it's not good,if it's progressed, and spreaded.I had to watch my grandmother suffer, for so long, with this cancer, believe me it wasn't pretty. She couldn't eat, drink,or never sleep. All she did was throw up all the time, and suffer.I wish I could talk to my family, but they just don't understand.

by Anona, Oct 01, 2000 12:00AM
Sounds like to me it can be acid reflex. To many acids in your system.Or it can be a Alcer.I went through the same thing and I still do and my doctor told me its from having too much acid in my system.Lay off of Soda and acid drinks and food that contains high amounts of acids.Drink water instead of soda. Also you might think about staying away from any kind of spicy sauces because that can cause you to have stomach problems. You might want to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion from another doctor,Someone that studies gastro inflammtions. Please E-mail me back and let me know..

by Cateybugs, Oct 03, 2000 12:00AM
Dear Kat:

I have the same exact symptoms that you mentioned, I just went last week and had an endoscopy & an ultrasound done and the results were negative.  However; I still have the pain under my ribcage on the left side.  It bothers me during the night when I go to roll from my left side to my right.  I get a burning stabbing pain that wakes me up. I too am afraid that there is something really wrong with me, but when I tell my doctor they say they have no idea what it is.  I see that your note was posted about a year ago, have you found out what your problem was yet?  I would really appreciate an answer.

You can contact me at Cateybugs @ AOL.com

Sincerely,

Cateybugs

I too have been experiencing a similar pain on my left side under my rib cage for some time now.  I too am a worrier and am afraid it is something serious but too afraid to get to the doctor for a diagnosis.  I began experiencing this pain during a large change in my life also.  Although I do not drink, I have put on weight and notice that the pain is worse when I eat rich foods or over eat, but also when I sit and my posture isn't good.  I also want to know what this pain could be caused from, and what I should do about it.  Could it be an ulcer or something much more serious?

I have been having the exact same pain and symptoms for about six months now off and on . It feel like theres something inside there, like inflamation (inflammation). I dont smoke, drink or take anything stronger than Tylenol.  I eat a low fat diet and drink lots of liquids. I had gestational Diabetes twice and since my son was born three years ago, I have developed low blood sugars instead of high. I thought i had an ulcer or tumor or pancreitis or something.

I have had my gallbladder out 2 years ago.A couple of months after the gallbladder operation, the doctors found an ulcer. I was given antibiotics and was feeling better for about 4 months and then the pain started again. Without taking any tests, the doctors have diagnosed me with Reflux and I have been on meds ever since.  I still get alot of pain under my right rib, each attack getting worse. Now, I am being treated like I'm some kind of nut!!!!!! I've been to 4 different doctors. Each one has a different diagnoses. 1. Reflux  2. Adhesions  3. muscle (sp?) pull. 4. Don't know. Not one of these doctors will even do a test to see what's going on, just more pills. I'm 45, female and didn't have many health problems until the gallbadder!

It sounds like you may have costochondritis.  Is is inflammation of the cartilage of the ribs and sternum.  The pain may be sharp or a dull ache.  It usually occurs on the left side.  It is confused with a heartattack at first.  Try pressing on your left ribs where the pain is and see if there is any tenderness.  Not too hard though.  It there is inflammation it will be painful.  I have suffered with costochondritis since I was about 15.  Ask your doctor for his opinion.  He will put you on some  a antiinflammatory drug.  There is lots of people that suffers with this.  Do not get alarmed.  It is not serios even though it feels like it. If your doctor diagnoses you with costochondritis, please feel free to email me with any concerns you may have.  I have did a lot of research.  Good luck!  Email me at ***@****.  Be sure to leave the e off of troubl.

Can anyone help me?  I have what I call attacks. I will be feeling fine and suddenly have the sharpest pain I have ever felt in my life.  It is on the left side.  It will start  right beside my sternum and shoot under my left breast under my ribs up into my shoulder.  I have been suffering for about 7 months now.  When I have them I can not move or and have to take shallow breaths for about 10-15 mins.  Movement makes it worse.  The doctor said it was my costochondritis but I do not think so.  I have had costochondritis for 14 years and it does not feel like this.  I can not go anywhere.  I am afraid to leave home afraid that I will have an "attack".  If anyon can help me get an idea of what might be wrong please, email me at ***@****.  No e on troubl.  I can not make anyone understand how bad the pain is.  It is worse than when I had my son (naturally),without pain medicine.  Has anyone experienced anything like this?  Help me if you can.

Kat,

I have been having the same symptoms as you.  I was in the hospital for six hours only for them to tell me nothing was wrong.  I am still having those same pains.  My pain started in my stomach on the lower right side. It then spread to my lower right side of my back, and even in my neck. I was just curious if you are still having these symptoms and if you were treated. I would like to know for my sake whether it is something serious or not. My e-mail address is ***@****.  If you could let me know I would deeply appreciate it.

                    Thank You,

I have the same problem with my stomach.  I have pain and when i'm under stress it feels like a burning sensation over my stomach.  My stomach feels like a volcano and I feel feverish from the stomach.  I too would like an answer as to what to do because the doctors are no help.  they told me it was all in my head.

by CARRIE, important info that can help you, Oct 21, 2000 12:00AM
your daughter is probably experiencing the same thing i have-irritable bowel syndrome, and your doctor is right, it is all in your head.  Since IBS is such a new condition, most people have never heard about it but the truth is that over 2 million americans suffer from it.  They are classified in three groups-little, moderate, or extreme.  Little means the person gets your daughter's symptoms but only when something really extreme happens (a death in the family, losing a job, etc.) moderate is every so often, and what i and i think your daughter have are the extreme.  We get it over the smallest things.  You know what the syptoms (symptoms) are, but you should know exactly what it is first.  Irribatle bowel sydrome occurs when a person who obsseses over stress (even if they dont realize it) gets stomach aches as a result because he brain sends stressful brain waves to the bowels in your intestine, and the intestine starts to move around, in the same way it does when you have a bowel movement, only much more painful depending on the person.  This is why IBS is offen mis-diagnosed as gas pain, acid pain, and constipation as it was in my case, etc. But, as you have found, these medications often do not help at all. Diet often can help/worsen the  symptoms.  According to my research, I've found that doughy foods such as bagels or bread, and foods high in sugar make the cramps worse or more frequent. (NOTE: IBS also causes weight loss because cramps often come after eating, making the person unwilling to eat in avoidance of pain.)
On a lighter note-The good news is that if your daughter DOES have IBS, it is not life threating (though life altering), and cannot damage any of your intestinal organs.
I hope this helps you and your daughter but since I am only twelve, and because IBS shares symptoms of many other serious problems, you should have your daughter go in for tests to rule out any other serious problems.
sincerely,
nicki

by Lauryn, Nov 26, 2000 12:00AM
This pain could be just you over reacting about something.  Maybe all these changes in your life are really stressing you out. I think that you should go out and get some exercise and take your mind off things.  If the doctors haven't found anything wrong then i'm sure you have nothing to worry about.  The point that i would really start worrying about is if it hurts to much to even move.  Then something is up with your stomach, but until then I think that you need to just relax and take a break off things.

by Dale, Nov 28, 2000 12:00AM
you know your body more then anyone, don't be discouraged as i was and am at times, i have a number of problems with my stomach, including barretts, i have been to doctor time and time again and am just now getting somewhere with it even after two surguries to correct the barretts. i now have another problem after eating, my stomach blows up like a balloon and gets hard, even after small amounts of food. i have lost 165 pounds in one and a half years.

i HAVE HAD SIMILAR PAIN ON MY LEFT HAND SIDE.  MY DOCTOR DIAGNOSED ME WITH IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROMEAFTER I HAD A CAT SCAN DONE.

by diana, Dec 02, 2000 12:00AM
Hello Kat, it is possible that you have a lot of stresses in your life.  Right now I am trying to help a friend with the same type of problem and the doctor said that it is stress that makes sertain things look as if there is a physical presence of the disease.  I believe him b/c I know that stress makes a lot of changes in our lives.

I hope I was able to help.  Lot's of luck.

Diana.

by Debbi, Dec 04, 2000 12:00AM
If you find out anything, please let me know as I am suffering from the same thing for the past three weeks.
I cannot sleep on my left side as it awakens me in the middle of the night, it has not hampered my work preformance, it is uncomfortable as if I have brused a muscle. It has gotten to the point that I feel I should see a doctor.  Could it be because of my age? Could it be because if I get up too fast that it seems that a muscle has tightened?  I don't know, but, I wish I did.

I resently over the years have had cronic stomach pain, under my rib cage, right side and left. I had a series of test's to see what the problem was, and I too was diagnosed with depression. I was tired all the time and I felt sick after eating. I never had vomiting but extreme nausia. In September of this year I demanded my doctor to find the cause. I was certain I had a rare disease or a vitamin deficiancy. Low and behold I was given an ultra sound on my stomach and they discovered gall stones, tons of them.I just had gall bladder surgery this October and it was apparently ready to burst. I dont know if this is what you could possibly have, but it's worth looking into. Men and woman have this problem. Everyone is different and has different symptoms.

my stomach has been hurting for more than 5 years. it would usually hurt after i ate anything. but now it hurts even when i dont eat. it feels like burning chemicals inside my sotmach like if it is eating me up inside. and sometimes i feel this pain in my stomach that after some seconds makes me want to go to the restroom then after awhile gives me the feeling of vomiting. everytime i go to the doctor they never know what it is and just give me different medicines all the time.

There are many similarities to the problems posted here and unfortunately, 95% are probably "diet related"! Disorders of the digestive tract are "THE #1 REASON FOR HOSPITAL VISITS IN NORTH AMERICA"! Sadly, the majority of prescription drugs only "mask" the symptoms but do not go to the root cause of the problem, generally meaning that it will return at a later date, with far more of a vengeance! Additionally, there are many good drug sites you can visit, which lists the devastating side-effects from all these drugs with the outcome that all too often, the so-called cure is worse than the disease!

If anyone here is "seriously" interested in trying to find help by means of natural herbal remedies rather than drugs, please feel free to e-mail me at <***@****> and I'll do my best to assist. I also have an excellent booklet which is condensed from a lot of other material, on the importance of cleansing the colon, and the myriad of related problems that can result from failure to do this.

Cheers,

Wendell

I am suffering from the exact thing too. Pain in my left side under the rib cage.   I too am worried does anyone have an answer for us?????   I had an endoscopy last week showed no hernia ulcers etc. Thank God.    I am going back to gastro Dr on Tuesday 1/9 for a follow up and he plans to set me up to have a colonoscopy.   Anyone have an answer what this pain could be???? thanks...

by rose, Jan 09, 2001 12:00AM
I also have suffered with upper right sided pain and severe reflux of a burning nature.

I have a question to those who have had a colonoscopy/EGD.

Recently I had these done.  I was told that I would be comfortable and not feel a thing.  I felt everything and was crying on the table and this really made the doctor upset. (first time, I cried in 10 years)

He humiliated me to the point that I was paralyzed with fear and repeatedly had to apologize to him and the nurse for my crying and saying the word, "damn" when a knife like pain would occur during the colonoscopy.   He told me that in his 22 years that no one acted up like I did and I was not to use the word "damn" again and to quit my crying or else he would stop and I would have to come back later when I behaved myself.

He then did the EGD and lanced a stricture in the esophagus.

He had me on a drug via IV, called Fentynal (an opiod) which did not do a thing for the very painful colonoscopy when this doc would make the turns in the intestine.  It was like a knife cutting thru me.

I know I will have to have more of these done in a year or so.  Is this really me? or was this a very insensitve physician.  The nurse was siding with the doctor but a nice male orderly in the room was very kind and dabbed my tears and held my hand and assured me later that this has happened with other patients.

Any comments would be appreciated as I do not want this to happen again.

Thank You.

My son, Alec, 9 years old, is suffering from severe stomach pains. He vomits often, not only after eating, but sometimes in the morning before school.  Alec was tested 2 years ago by a specialist. The doctor ran a scope down the throat, but didn't see anything. All that was told to us was that his white blood cell count was a little low.  He had no concern for this.  The stomach problems seemed to gradually go away.  For the past 2 weeks he has been having them again worse than ever. I brought him to a doctor and the doctor has scheduled another GI test. I feel I am going down the same road again.
Alec says he feels like his throat is closing sometimes. He is bended in half sometimes because of the pain in his stomach. I am giving him Tagamet that was orders from the doctor. It doesn't seem to be making a difference.  There is a history of nervous stomach problems in my family. Can this be the cause? What can I do to help him.  I looked up the reflux on the computer and from what I have read symptoms are chest pains that he does not complain about. It is very hard to see your 9 year old cry and not be able to help him. If you have any ideas as to what may be causing this problem please let me know.  He does not have a problem going to the bathroom, so I know it is not that.  Sometimes he plays like a normal child and times he is in so much pain that he crys. Please if you have any insite let me know. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me at Sweetiepeetie_2001***@****.  Thank You again.

I keep geeting stomach pains of and on.  I don't know the reason but i need a solution if you have one to offer

This is in response to Angela.  My 13yr old son had the same symptons.  It just started up one day, out of the blue.  He lost about 20lbs. and missed approx. 2 months of school.  He was well liked,a high acheiving athlete, good student etc.  He thought that he was going crazy!! He was in a lot of stomach pain, lots of gas, and also some vomiting. After many tests (endoscopy, barium drinks, cat scans, etc) I decided to eliminate all milk products, and read every label for lactose, whey etc.  After 3 days he was 100% back to normal. As difficult as this has been for him to eliminate all of the milk , he has made a remarkable recovery.  He takes lactaid pills with everything he eats, just in case there is some hidden milk.  I thank God for his health back every day.  It is definately worth a try.  Good luck, Anne

Hey, You sound like me. I too am depressed and suffer from a pain almost like yours. It is in the lower left of my tummy and is mind numbing. It can be very dull or very strong. But with mine in th start it came with a sick feeling to my tummy and dizzy feeling. I too went to the doc and he said at first i had a cold, then it was i have an infection and then it was i have an sist on my overy. But they were all tested and nothing. But i too still have this pain. It has been months and it comes and goes. But in the past few months the pain gets stronger and stronger.  I fear that there is nothing that they can do for either one of us. Because My docs at least seam to be at the end of there suggestion box. Please let me know if you are able to pin point this. But dont wait around go and have it looked at. I know how you feel and it sucks. But at least let them know that the pain is there, maybe they can help you.Good luck!!

I have the same rib cage pain. My doctor said it a fractured rib due to severe coughing I had suffered a year prior probably due to reflux disease.  However, I did more research because I wasn't quite sure that may be it.  I feared a tumor since my sister died from cancer of the lung and spleen and I am high risk.  In my research of fractures, I was lead to "Osteoporosis".  Look in Health, then Mayo Clinic for osteoporosis. This may help.
Good luck.

I was curious if anyone has had these symptoms:
An achy, knawing feeling when stomach is empty-- relief when you eat. I have been tested for h-pylori and also ulcers, and results are negative... Dr. says it's probably a NERVOUS STOMACH, which I am guessing can lead to an ulcer..All I know is that I have had this pain since right after the birth of my last baby- 9 mos. ago. I don't think it's related to the birth, but for what it's worth, I was on strong antibiotics during labor. The pain in my stomach is most prominent in the morning before I eat. Zantac didn't seem to help the pain subside...but Maalox seems to help it somewhat. This pain is not a heart-burn feeling either,it is  more like a dull, annoying ache.

by Jazz, Feb 23, 2001 12:00AM
Amazing...

Well, let me join the club...

Have had upper left quadrant abdominal pain for over 12 years..

Developed it after I developed a strange flu like illness that put me down for a couple of weeks..(thought I was going to die it was so bad..lost 15 lbs....sleeping 12+ hrs a day....hot and cold flashes, extreme fatigue, etc.)

Well ever since that illness, I have had some level of upper left quad abdominal pain, sometimes very strong pains, other times moderate but exist pretty much all the time..

More gas and bloating then before also...

Yep..worse 1-2 hours after eating (most of the time)...when totally fasting the pain is somewhat better...sometimes I accidently eat something that almost makes the pain go away...but it is not predictable or real repeatable...pressing in that area seems to help releive the pain a bit also..

Strange thing....when I twist my rib cage to the right sometimes a "pop" is heard and felt and, for a few minutes the pain is considerably less.  Told a Gastro about it and she felt and heard it...her eyes got real big...said we would have to invesigate it and scheduled a few more tests...all normal...

Now let's add moderately hypertensive (I think related to the pain...)If I take a good dose of Ibuprophen and I get lucky and the pains eases, guess what my BP goes way down...(not rocket science...folks)

And now for the grand finale, just started a few months ago...  PVCs and heart palps also... (One ER visit and a few Doc visits later...they say they are benign and have no real explanation...)

Tried meds for the PVC and palps, PVC get better but BP goes way down and so does pulse (hows 60 BPM)because the meds are basically BP meds.  Also the meds make abdominal pain worse..can't win can we...

And of course...like everyone...I had all the tests, upper GI, Cat scan, Colonoscopy, etc,.etc....all basically normal...

No real diagnosis...Docs say..."everything is fine so you should feel good about it, right??"

Anyway, If anyone has any good ideas I would love to hear them...will answer questions if you need to know more..

If someone (a Doc let's say..) ever finds the time to really look at this thing and stop worrying about 15 minute office visits and the managed care thing, I am sure they will find the answer and make a mint...not to mention become a saint to a whole lot of people.

Take care all....

This all started after the birth of my second child. I started having frequent stomach aches after meals. I went to the doctor and he put me on prilosec, but that did not help. So they started running a bunch of tests. A Hyda Scan showed that my gallbladder was functioning well below the normal percentage, One week later I had my gallbladder removed. I felt okay for a few days, and then all of the sudden I started having an awful pain in my stomach, it felt like somebody had their hands around it and was sqeezing it as hard as they could, I would break out in sweats and cry it hurt so bad. The episodes as I call them last anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes which seems like an eternity when you hurt that bad, hunger seems to trigger it most of the time but not always, I try to keep my stomach full, because if it starts to feel the least bit empty it triggers it. I reported this to my doctor and he did an upper endoscopy. He said I had some inflammation of the stomach,  and that my esophagus had some wear. He put me on protonix, and Cardizem. Altough they are not happening as frequently, but they are still occuring, and it is greatly affecting my life. I am only 23, and I felt so much better, before I had my gallbladder taken out Why? Please Help.

Hello, Im no doctor or anything, but I read your post, and I have been haveing the same problem, what my doctor done, was order urine test and a series of blood test. Well I took all of the test today, and then my doctor called me back with the bad news tonight, the first thing he asked me was how was I feeling? and I told him still not good, I had went to the doctor for the flu, only to get this phone call after all of the test, the doctor told me that I had alot of blood in my urine, which I allready knew, cause I have a kidney diease. But what I didnt know was that he told me that I had a inflamed liver, I'm not sure what causes this, but my doctor is very concerned about it, he told me that I need to come in the office and talk to him.
But I had the same symptoms as you do, I hurt in my side and back, my back mainly, and I have very loose bowels as well, and I get sick at my stomache alot, so maybe you need to tell your doctor to do alot of blood test on you as well to see if they can find anything like they found on me.

That's how I got to this article.  I don't use alcohol, but I have been going through stressful life situations.  Haven't gone to emergency room yet ( I might).  I am very eager to know what is causing my symptoms.  Any educated, informed opinion or other shared information would be greatly appreciated.

I found this on line.  This is what I have.
PAINFUL RIB SYNDROME
What you are referring to has several names.  In addition to “floating rib,” it’s also known as “slipping rib” or “Cyiaz’s syndrome,” for the French physician who first described it in 1919.  Mayo Clinic physicians prefer to call it slipping rib.
Slipping rib is rare, but can be painful and alarming.  When it occurs, the end of one of the lower five ribs on either side of your rib cage loosens and slips from its place, lodging inside or outside the rib above it.
Usually, this happens when ligaments that bind your ribs together loosen.  This is a “mechanical” problem and not a serious illness.  (you can tell whoever wrote this does NOT have the problem.)
You may feel a sharp, stabbing pain accompanies by the sensation of rib movement.  Or, you may feel a dull ache or burning that radiates to your back.  The pain may worsen when you lie down, sit, bend forward, breathe deeply, cough or walk.  The pain can last for several hours or weeks at a time.
Because slipping rib is so rare, it can be difficult to diagnose.  Sometimes the pain can feel like the upper abdominal pain caused by pleurisy or diseases of the gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, duodenum or esophagus.  However, when slipping rib is suspected, physicians may utilize a maneuver that involves pulling forward on your ribs.  If this is painful, then you may have slipping rib.
Treatment usually involves pain medication, possible steroid injections, and lifestyle changes to avoid activities that case pain.  In more severe cases, surgery to remove the slipping rib may be necessary.
*******
I had been doctoring with this pain for a while.  I was sent to a surgeon for gall bladder surgery.  We were about to leave his office to set up the date for it, and he had a light bulb moment.  He asked me to get up on his table again.  He thought it was not gall bladder, (I did have a couple of small stones) but Painful Rib Syndrome was his diagnosis.  He set up cortisone shots on my left side.  He said if it helped the pain it would verify his diagnosis.  The pain was gone by the time I left the hospital.  I was pain free for about 8 months.  When it returned I had another cortisone fix.  That lasted about 3 months.  I had the third set of shots.  But I knew I would have to find some anther  way to get rid of the pain.
A pain management Dr. had suggested the removal of a rib, or maybe 2 or 3.  And no guarantee that I would get rid of the pain.  I was set up with an appointment at the Mayo Clinic for a second opinion.
My niece had interviewed a Chiropractor for a news story.  She also did acupuncture.  And my niece thought I should give it a try.  I think I had 3 treatments a week for 2 weeks.  There was improvement!  I continued treatment and canceled the Mayo appointment.  I don’t know how it works, I don’t understand it.
Now I have a treatment at the beginning of each season, and in between if I need it.

I just wanted to let you know I really feel for all of you, I have had this pain in my middle upper stomach right under my ribs since my daughter was born 5 months ago on the 11th.  At first I thought it was heartburn and I was taking ovc meds for it, but nothing helped.  The drs. say its a hernia, I am not sure what it is, I only know that I am great pain every day and have been for 5 months.  I wake up feverish, and am doubled over in pain all the time.  I am only 27 and I don't understand why.  If anyone has any info that will link to my problem please feel free to email or IM me.  ***@****. I HAVE STOMACH PROBLEMS. I HACE A PRESCRIPTION TO PEPCID. I ALWAYS BURP ALOT AND DO NOT FEEL VERY GOOD MOST OF THE TIME

by Legacy, Mar 17, 2001 12:00AM
I have similar problems with the bad stomach pain on and off again.  It's usually right where my ribs meet and in the upper part of my stomach.  I also get bad sharp chest pains that are from a chest strain injury that gets re-strained when the muscles are weak.

My doctor tried telling me I had costochondritis but I'm not sure if I believe him completely.  I was in a car accident two years ago and I had severe whiplash to my chest from the seat belt strap.  As soon as I got out of the car my chest started seizing up and it got so bad that I couldn't sit up on my own or else I couldn't breathe.  At the hospital they did x-rays and said I didn't have any broken ribs and after a few weeks the pain went away.  However, it flares up from time to time, especially during periods when I'm not very active.

I went to the emergency room once last spring and then again a few months ago when the pain was really intense and wouldn't go away.  That was when the doctor said I had a chest strain from the original injury.  This makes the most sense, and the injured areas will get really sore and inflamed, just like with costochondritis.  Plus, I'm aware that I have lots of congestion and scar tissue around this area, and problems with the cartelige.  It's really gross sometimes cause I can feel it moving when I walk.  Something new with it are the muscle spasms that I've been having since December.  They feel like a vibration/quivering over my heart and left upper ribcage area. They made me really anxious at first of course, but now I understand them better.

I've been having stomach problems too and somehow I think it's all tied in together.  Sometimes I'll have acidy gas gurgling in my stomach and sometimes this is up under my left ribcage, just over from my heart on my side.  Should I really be feeling this that high up? I think it's weird.

If anyone has any advice or ideas please post them.

Thanks

I have had stomach pains all my life. I got an upper GI and all types of tests and doctors have found nothing.  After eating I get the worst pains in my stomach(also in the morning).  When it comes time for my period, I get the worst cramps, bloating, gas pains, dizziness, back and neck aches, etc.  Yes I do have some allergy problems and I am a very stressful person but I am taking medcine for those problems.  I am just sick of being sick all the time and not knowing what is wrong with me.
I just want to know if muccas(fleme) is causing these pains or is it something else, and what can I do about it.  I've got so many tests from doctors and nothing but I still have pains.

by krisg, Mar 22, 2001 12:00AM
I don't know if this will help anyone, but I think some of the complaints could be esophageal spasms.  I have been trying to find out why I get very intense pain right between my ribs, where they begin to separate.  The pain is squeezing and pressure and I can't talk and have trouble breathing.  It is so severe that I feel like my heart will stop at any moment.  Needless to say, I've been through the doctor mill too. I've had tests and everything is normal.  I have not had any testing for the esophagus.  That is the only thing left that hasn't been checked.  I do take an anti-spasm med. and it seems to help most of the time.  Yesterday I had an attack on the way to the airport, I had to pull over and put an anti-spasm pill under my tongue.  It did eventually help just before I reached the ER.  Funny how none of the doc.s and specialists ever mention this could be the cause.  Obviously I have the more intense kind.  Does anyone know of any other med.s that might be stronger?? Has anyone been diagnosed with this or something similar?  I can swallow fine and these attacks can happen anytime of the day or night.  I hate being a medical mystery, I would like to find a cause and cure quickly.!!  This thing is really affecting my quality of life.  any help would be appreciated.

I am surprised to find someone else that has this pain.  I know it is not my gallbladder because I had that taken out a couple of years ago.  I am 51 and I figured it was part of getting older.  However, It is a constant pain which makes it uncomfortable to sit or even lay down.  I have been diagnosed tentatively with irritable bowel syndrome.  But this does not feel like any gas.  It makes it painful to wear a bra too.  If you find out what yours is let me know.  Good luck.

Hi my name is Holly. I have endo and had a hyst last Oct. because of it. I have had pain in my left side right under my ribs for years. I thought that it was related to my endo but now know that it isnt. When the pain comes on it hits in the front first then it hits in the back like kidney area. It is like having a contraction. I scream and roll around on the floor for a few minutes and then it goes away. And then other times it just aches for long periods of time like days. I have looked everywhere on the internet for these symptoms and have found nothing. I just got back on insurance so I will be seeing a Dr. soon. I had an attack yesterday and it was so bad I almost had my son call 911. I just don't know what to do or what is going on with me. Anything you guys can tell me would be so appreciated! I also wanted to know what tests I can have the Dr. run? Thank you all so much.

I have had many flare ups according to the above decriptive, but recently I have been suffering chronic pain non-stop for over three weeks now. The the pain subsides and then becomes acute,
practically unbearable.
It begins right under the curve of the breast bone, then radiates
down and across the entire stomach area.
This condition in the past has been acute, but never lasted more than a week. Right now it appears to be here to stay.
What do you suggest? My job takes me out of town and i don't want to seek a new doctor. Just got home from three months of work out of town, leaving for Illinois on friday for about 30 days.
please advise.

I have the same concern like you,I have been to the doctor office a dozen of times afraid that I might have something wrong.
I had ultrasounds and Cat Scan and they didn't find anything other than inflamation (inflammation) around my rib cage due to the stress.
I've got crampings on the right side of the abdomen and occasionaly goes down to the pelvic area I also feel a little pinch underneath my chin and lots of back pain around the blades area so as you can see you are not alone.
For sometime I though I may suffer of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) Because some of my symtoms are similar, but my doctor disagreed.
If you know more about this please e-mail me I really need to inform myself about any clinical advances on this matter.
On the meantime I hope you'll get better, but you need to go see a doctor!

Erin, first you need to find a doc who will work with you.  Hope you have a plan that will allow this.  You have to rule out serious stuff so you really need to keep a book on symtoms and location.  A knowlegeable patient keeps the doc honest.  The more you can tell the doc the better he can focus.  Most likely, ruling out some serious problem, you have a fecal impaction that is not allowing your body to use nutrients and then pass them.  But that will tell in your bowel movements.  If regular and well formed then not a fecal impaction.  Pencil like, very gassy, broken up, good chance of fecal impaction.  Couple of tests doc can run..barium enema, colonoscopy. Neither is very uncomfortable. Results tell alot.  A possibility is Chrone's Disease or Diverticulosus.  Get blood work done to look forr infection.  Something to consider at this point.  If you have recently (last year) used any antibiotics you killed all the good stuff in your bowel.  You must start a regimes with Probiotics.  Without the good guys in you belly and bowel your body cannot do its job.  Another consideration is a fungal yeast called Candida.  Most MDs scoff at the idea.  Get Sherry Roger's books (any will do) and learn all you can about candida.  Then you can graduate to William Crook or William Rae.  Massive material about this creature.  You are not alone with this.  Millions of Americans, men and women, suffer exactly the same symtoms.  Please do not let them treat your symtoms.  Make the find the cause.  Good luck.

I don't have an answer to your question but I also have been having left side pain and has become worse in the past few years.I fell off a horse about 20 years ago and landed on that side. I went to a chiropractor last year and he said that I may have broken my ribs when I fell and didn't go to the doctor. It hurts from my the middle of my stomach and goes around to my back. When I am sitting the pain is much worse and makes me sick to my stomach.  I have had ulcers in the past but this pain is constant now, more so in my side/back.I am worried also!! A lot of people have the same symptoms. I am 32 yrs old and have had the pain for a year.  I have had blood test, a abdominal ultrasound, CT scan without/with contrast, and  a Upper GI. I am now going to a Doctor for surgery in 3 days.  The only thing they can find wrong is High Cholestrol and a fat mass 1" on my liver.  I was put on a diet 2 months ago for low fat and cholestrol.  I have lost 20 lbs since then, I weigh 112 lbs.-5' 2 1/2".  I also have started to burp alot.  I told them I want surgery, because I am sick of the pain.  This will be my 11th operation.  The 2nd in a year.  My appendix, gall bladder, stomach, female organs, kidneys, etc white blood count is all fine-except the pain and I have a fever for 6 months.  Hopefully when I have surgery in the next 2 weeks I will get a answer.

I too experience the same type of pain that you describe.  Mine feels almost like a side ache that is intermittent in nature and hurts from the middle of my sternum some days to under my ribs.  I have been to the doctor before and they found nothing wrong.  I also can’t help but feel something is wrong because if it were nothing, why would it hurt.  Did you ever resolve your issue?

A little guy about 3inches high, holds a flaming torch and stabs me on the inside, in the same place. Under my upper left rib cage, under my left breast. after the stabbing pain, then a constant burning sensation, and pressure. Have had it for about a year now, but has in the last few weeks been getting worse, and more often. almost constant now. thats how I came to this site, and have not seen any answers. I do not want on the doctor roller coaster, and a bunch of invasive tests. first of all, I have no insurance and am a single mom of 4 kids, and second of all, I have zero faith in medical doctors. I wish I could find a good homeopathic physician. After reading all the comments, and seeing the battery of tests so many have gone through with out any answers,I am really wondering where to go to get an answer. This site has alot of questions, and a couple of lame answers from the docs. Thanks to those who have commented on what they have found out, and I will do the same. So far, I am taking aloe vera gel, and MSM. Enzymes:digezyme: and acidophilus. It seems to help so far. Good luck to you all, and I hope we all find our answers.

Someone I am close to is experiencing the same symptoms. What could this be?

by BeckDiva, May 22, 2001 12:00AM
I believe that you all have gastritis.
all of your symptoms are very familuar to me.
you should go to a doctor and hav him prescribe something (?RANIHEXAL?) to lower the acid levels in your stomach and allow the infection to heal.
but if you dont do that, the symptoms only get worse untill it eventually hurts to breath.
trust me, i know :\
not very pleasent, and its even worse to go to umpteen doctors and have them not no whats wrong with you.
but i eventually found out.

good luck all...

feel free to let me know whats happening... :)

I've been up all night with stomach pain. Right side in my stomach. This was a problem almost 20 years ago and the docs could find nothing wrong. About 2 months or so ago it started back up. I thought it might be related to my use of flonase for chronic sinusitis as it's listed as a side effect. So I discontinued the flonase....That seemed to stop it for a few weeks. When it began years ago it only came on at night. Never once during the day. This past week it's been at any and all times. When it starts the pain lasts for about 10 to 12 hours. Nothing really seems to help relieve it.

What's dpressing is that gastrointestinal disorders are the hardest to correctly diagnose. I have no insurance and I deeply dread getting on that merry-go-round of doctors and testing and knowing that the chances of a correct diagnoses are slim.

My heart goes out to all of you who suffer this kind of pain. And I wish all of us luck in 'fixing' this....and now maybe that my pain is easing off I can get a few hours of sleep.

ooops...sorry. That should read "*left*" side of my stomach. Sigh, that's what comes from lack of sleep.

I've been taking tagamet (cimetidine)400mgs twice a day and I've cut out red meat and pork. They're very hard to digest as well as cheese. I've been eating more frequent, smaller meals. I was also told to use mylanta. Last night for the first time I had an attack comming on and I was able to stop it!! The stress I've been under is letting up some. Or should I say changing. I can take action now rather than sit and wait. The waiting was killing me. BTW, the 400mgs of tagamet is perscription dosage. As with any med....read the drug interaction precautions etc before using......

I have been suffering with the same pain (left side of rib cage), shooting pains across back, regurgitation of food, wind,  breathing problems (leading sometimes to panic attacks) and depression for over 10 years now and I have been for various tests, after a second upper gi-endoscopy I have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia, in my case this causes the entrance to the stomach to be constantly open and does not shut properly.
This is what was explained to me by my specialist, the pain in the chest (in most cases you could place your finger on the exact same spot) is caused by an inflamed area of the gullet caused by acid being present in the gullet, this also causes the pains felt across the back.  The breathing problems I have been having is also due to acid in the gullet (airways restricting to prevent acid entering lungs).
Since receiving this information I have now managed to control my condition and I no longer suffer panic attacks, when I feel breathing difficulties I take an antacid (currently on Ranitidine 150mg) and the symptoms usually go away within 10 mins, the pain in my chest is still there but I no longer worry about it and this also helps as anxiety can cause your body to produce excess acid thus making it worse.
I am waiting to go for motility and ph tests (14/6/01) and depending on the results I might have to undergo an operation to repair my hiatus.

This is only information relating to my own condition and I would advise anyone with chest pains to see their doctor, but I thought that I would write this because I know that 10 years of worrying about my condition has probably made my condition worse.
