Joshua
It sounds like you are having stress-related symptoms. It is most likely being caused by acid reflux and/or gas even though you think it doesn't feel like acid reflux. Are you still drinking any alcohol? If you are, that may be part of the problem. Caffeine will also contribute. If you have already been worked up by a physician, you can probably rest assured that stress and anxiety is the underlying cause. If you can avoid alcohol and caffeine, you will be two steps ahead. If you cannot give up the caffeine and alcohol, you should try to accept that your symptoms are not serious and will not hurt you. Your mind is very powerful and can make you think that there is something wrong with you even after your doctor has examined you and given you a clean bill of health. You may want to talk to a Psychiatrist if you haven't already done so. It has worked for me. Don't worry, be happy. Good luck!

Good luck
We didn't make it there, as after about 30 minutes after it started, it slowly subsided. Don't know what it was, but my mom though it might be gallstones, as most of her sisters had their gall bladder removed, ans she was familiar with the symptoms.
My whole abdomen was cramping, so much so that it hurt to breathe, or straighten up. I have had a very busy stressful couple of weeks, and have been not eating right...eating on the run..mostly fast food. (I know..bad girl )
While I was hurting this afternoon, there was pain and pressure
around my bottom as well as my entire abdomen. I will ask the
doctor next time I'm there...or sooner if it should happen again
Whaddya think...hmmm?
Thanks in advance for your responses.
Cheers,
Steff
Because the pain you desribe is so high a possibility may be gall bladder. You need to follow up on this - call your local hospital for referrals in your area. Ask or suggest the following tests - endosopy - small bowel series and colonoscopy. If you have any imflammation as you speculate you will know for sure after these tests. A simple blood test measuring your sed rate (imflamation) will also serve as a motivator for these tests, if the imflammation is high.
Take care of yourself - you are your own healer first!
I too have a 16 year old son (who is now in the hospital) and I have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease years ago so yes it can happen. The doctors think it may be related by ethnics rather than heredity but no one really knows.
My son has been seriously ill since last May - he was diagnosed 5 years ago with ulcerative colitis and was treated with prednisone and asacol which always worked in the past. This time he was not recovering, was hospitalized in August with IV steroids and flagile but was only good for about a week. He has lost 50 lbs. since May and is deteriorating quickly not to mention depressed. He is being home tutored because he couldn't make it to school. I secured the name of another specialist in our area because his doctor was hesitant to put him on 6 mp because it takes 3 months or more to begin working and he wanted to get this event under control first. The new gastro admitted him to the hospital and I finally got him to start running more tests. Now they're saying he has Crohn's colitis (even his old doctor but never shared that with us) and the doctor is considering Remicaid infusion ( or Infliximab) which is basically an antibody which reduces the imflammation to nothing quickly.
To start off with your daughter I would suggest a blood test to measure the imflammation(sed rate). If it is high graduate from there. A colonoscopy, small bowel series and possibly an endiscope if the small bowel series is indicating imflammation or disease. Since they use the same type of anesthesia for the colonoscopy and the endoscopy I would suggest having them done at the same time just so you don't have to submit your daughter to anesthesia twice.
Don't wait any longer - over time your daughter can develop other problems such as depression and eating disorder because she relates eating to pain. It is not pleasurable any longer so she may avoid food.
You and your daughter will be in my prayers. How is your Crohn's doing now? Are you under a doctor's care or are you in remission? I have been for 5 years now since my last surgery - pretty much pain free but diarreah (which is manageable) and no meds for 4-1/2 yrs.

eat a moderate amount of food. I'v had Abdominal ultrasounds,
abdominal cat scan and a Hitus Scan (gallbladder). It was
determined that my gallbladder is not working well. However,
the surgeon said the gallbladder is not causing my left pain.
Today a gastrologist performed an endoscopy (down my
throat checking out my stomach ect.) He prescribed prilosic
and said I may have gastritus. I am trying to get this resolved
Hope this helps you. Do you have any new news or developments?

p.s. this has been a problem of mine from the ages of 9 to 35 (current) ive been to many doctors and no answer
upper stomach problems, lack of appetite, dry metalic taste in
mouth, periodic flem (phlegm), weakness. I have tried mylanta, pepcid,
perlosec, all with not much help. Pain pills help, but I think
irritate the problem. One year/half ago I had upper/lower GI
diagnosis gastritis& reflux. This problem has happened after
2 surgeries. I have lost so much weight due to inability to
eat (I have to force myself to eat). My stomach feels so sore.\
If anyone has any suggestions or similar experience I appreciate
your help.
this condition started last night after I started using amoxicillin for a cold that was developing. I have asthma, so
when I feel the on set of a cold or when I produce yellow sputum
that's when I start the antibiotics to prevent further infection, at which time I'll need Corticosteriods to control my asthma. Is it possible that I could be developing an alergic (allergic) reaction to augmentin, now causing the occasional shooting pain or could this be the symptoms of something else, and if so what
other condition has similar characteristics? I have no other
symptoms like fever, blood in stool, diarrhea or headache.
Thank You

my stomach. A couple of weeks later, after some sleepless
nights ( the cramps seemed to occur early in the morning as well as between meals ) I was diagnosed with gastritis and
given 20 mg of Prilosec for 3 weeks.
I've stopped the coffee and watch what I eat although I can't say that my life is any less stressfull right now.
There are times when, even with the prilosec, I can hear
and feel acid ( at least I think it's acid ) being
squirted into my stomach, particularly between meals., (
When I detect this happening, I pop about 4 tums and that usually takes care of it. Biut to have to do this 10 times a day is probably not good for my health.
The problem seemed to end but a few months later, the same symptoms reoccurred.
So I went on Prilosec again. Now I am on 20 mg per day and I take 3 or 4 tums 10 times a day when I feel any
discomfort. The tums and bismol seem to do as much good as
the prilosec but I'm concerned about 2 things :
1) Is all of the calcium in the tums or other calcium based antacids going to cause other problems
2) Is the problem ( gastritis ) ever going to be
cured ?
There seems to be some pressure right under my sterum when the discomfort occurs. Could this be a symptom of GERD ?
Thanks.
on the left side of my stomach close to waist line. If I press it it hurts worst. I have no symtoms of any kind everything is normal except my pain. I have not been to the hospital yet. What advice can you give me

Any ideas?

Question, What could this pain be coming from, I am 49 yrs. old.
gall bladder surgery, now i am having the same problems last than six months, with the exact same problem. I also had a ultra sound and endoscopy. I was told that I had alot of gastritis Inflamation (inflammation) in the stomach. I haven't been able to eat, I do eat small portions, I did have diahrae for about a week I am just always feeling neusea all the time its like a 24 hr thing, i don't know what to think what is going on with me. I am not really scared if it could be cancer, I am praying that it is not. I am waiting now for the biospy to come, I have appt with the doctor, because he wants to see me in 1 to 2 weeks, he said I had alot of inflamation (inflammation). Could it be something else than cancer?
Have you gotten any responses and if so will you please send them to me I am haveing the same problem as you except for the fact that I am young and have not had an problems with alcohol abuse so if you could please contact me at ***@****. Thanks so much for your help.
Any information you can give is appreciated.
I have the same exact symptoms that you mentioned, I just went last week and had an endoscopy & an ultrasound done and the results were negative. However; I still have the pain under my ribcage on the left side. It bothers me during the night when I go to roll from my left side to my right. I get a burning stabbing pain that wakes me up. I too am afraid that there is something really wrong with me, but when I tell my doctor they say they have no idea what it is. I see that your note was posted about a year ago, have you found out what your problem was yet? I would really appreciate an answer.
You can contact me at Cateybugs @ AOL.com
Sincerely,

I have been having the same symptoms as you. I was in the hospital for six hours only for them to tell me nothing was wrong. I am still having those same pains. My pain started in my stomach on the lower right side. It then spread to my lower right side of my back, and even in my neck. I was just curious if you are still having these symptoms and if you were treated. I would like to know for my sake whether it is something serious or not. My e-mail address is ***@****. If you could let me know I would deeply appreciate it.
Thank You,

Boy reading your story hit home. I have had a pain on my right side under my rib cage and I can feel a sensation in my back when I drink something cold. I went to the doctor yesterday so so worried that it's something serious. They can not find anything wrong with me either. I haven't been feeling well and now Im very depressed not knowing is so hard. I just had to write to you and let you know I can feel for you. I wish you the best and hope they find out what the problem is.....shawna
On a lighter note-The good news is that if your daughter DOES have IBS, it is not life threating (though life altering), and cannot damage any of your intestinal organs.
I hope this helps you and your daughter but since I am only twelve, and because IBS shares symptoms of many other serious problems, you should have your daughter go in for tests to rule out any other serious problems.
sincerely,
nicki
thank you so much,

Diana.
I cannot sleep on my left side as it awakens me in the middle of the night, it has not hampered my work preformance, it is uncomfortable as if I have brused a muscle. It has gotten to the point that I feel I should see a doctor. Could it be because of my age? Could it be because if I get up too fast that it seems that a muscle has tightened? I don't know, but, I wish I did.

If anyone here is "seriously" interested in trying to find help by means of natural herbal remedies rather than drugs, please feel free to e-mail me at <***@****> and I'll do my best to assist. I also have an excellent booklet which is condensed from a lot of other material, on the importance of cleansing the colon, and the myriad of related problems that can result from failure to do this.

Carlos salazar. my e-mail is: ***@****.
I have a question to those who have had a colonoscopy/EGD.
Recently I had these done. I was told that I would be comfortable and not feel a thing. I felt everything and was crying on the table and this really made the doctor upset. (first time, I cried in 10 years)
He humiliated me to the point that I was paralyzed with fear and repeatedly had to apologize to him and the nurse for my crying and saying the word, "damn" when a knife like pain would occur during the colonoscopy. He told me that in his 22 years that no one acted up like I did and I was not to use the word "damn" again and to quit my crying or else he would stop and I would have to come back later when I behaved myself.
He then did the EGD and lanced a stricture in the esophagus.
He had me on a drug via IV, called Fentynal (an opiod) which did not do a thing for the very painful colonoscopy when this doc would make the turns in the intestine. It was like a knife cutting thru me.
I know I will have to have more of these done in a year or so. Is this really me? or was this a very insensitve physician. The nurse was siding with the doctor but a nice male orderly in the room was very kind and dabbed my tears and held my hand and assured me later that this has happened with other patients.
Any comments would be appreciated as I do not want this to happen again.
Thank You.

Alec says he feels like his throat is closing sometimes. He is bended in half sometimes because of the pain in his stomach. I am giving him Tagamet that was orders from the doctor. It doesn't seem to be making a difference. There is a history of nervous stomach problems in my family. Can this be the cause? What can I do to help him. I looked up the reflux on the computer and from what I have read symptoms are chest pains that he does not complain about. It is very hard to see your 9 year old cry and not be able to help him. If you have any ideas as to what may be causing this problem please let me know. He does not have a problem going to the bathroom, so I know it is not that. Sometimes he plays like a normal child and times he is in so much pain that he crys. Please if you have any insite let me know. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me at Sweetiepeetie_2001***@****. Thank You again.

Good luck.
An achy, knawing feeling when stomach is empty-- relief when you eat. I have been tested for h-pylori and also ulcers, and results are negative... Dr. says it's probably a NERVOUS STOMACH, which I am guessing can lead to an ulcer..All I know is that I have had this pain since right after the birth of my last baby- 9 mos. ago. I don't think it's related to the birth, but for what it's worth, I was on strong antibiotics during labor. The pain in my stomach is most prominent in the morning before I eat. Zantac didn't seem to help the pain subside...but Maalox seems to help it somewhat. This pain is not a heart-burn feeling either,it is more like a dull, annoying ache.
Well, let me join the club...
Have had upper left quadrant abdominal pain for over 12 years..
Developed it after I developed a strange flu like illness that put me down for a couple of weeks..(thought I was going to die it was so bad..lost 15 lbs....sleeping 12+ hrs a day....hot and cold flashes, extreme fatigue, etc.)
Well ever since that illness, I have had some level of upper left quad abdominal pain, sometimes very strong pains, other times moderate but exist pretty much all the time..
More gas and bloating then before also...
Yep..worse 1-2 hours after eating (most of the time)...when totally fasting the pain is somewhat better...sometimes I accidently eat something that almost makes the pain go away...but it is not predictable or real repeatable...pressing in that area seems to help releive the pain a bit also..
Strange thing....when I twist my rib cage to the right sometimes a "pop" is heard and felt and, for a few minutes the pain is considerably less. Told a Gastro about it and she felt and heard it...her eyes got real big...said we would have to invesigate it and scheduled a few more tests...all normal...
Now let's add moderately hypertensive (I think related to the pain...)If I take a good dose of Ibuprophen and I get lucky and the pains eases, guess what my BP goes way down...(not rocket science...folks)
And now for the grand finale, just started a few months ago... PVCs and heart palps also... (One ER visit and a few Doc visits later...they say they are benign and have no real explanation...)
Tried meds for the PVC and palps, PVC get better but BP goes way down and so does pulse (hows 60 BPM)because the meds are basically BP meds. Also the meds make abdominal pain worse..can't win can we...
And of course...like everyone...I had all the tests, upper GI, Cat scan, Colonoscopy, etc,.etc....all basically normal...
No real diagnosis...Docs say..."everything is fine so you should feel good about it, right??"
Anyway, If anyone has any good ideas I would love to hear them...will answer questions if you need to know more..
If someone (a Doc let's say..) ever finds the time to really look at this thing and stop worrying about 15 minute office visits and the managed care thing, I am sure they will find the answer and make a mint...not to mention become a saint to a whole lot of people.
Take care all....
But I had the same symptoms as you do, I hurt in my side and back, my back mainly, and I have very loose bowels as well, and I get sick at my stomache alot, so maybe you need to tell your doctor to do alot of blood test on you as well to see if they can find anything like they found on me.
If you would like to email me at my email address you can , feel free at

PAINFUL RIB SYNDROME
What you are referring to has several names. In addition to “floating rib,” it’s also known as “slipping rib” or “Cyiaz’s syndrome,” for the French physician who first described it in 1919. Mayo Clinic physicians prefer to call it slipping rib.
Slipping rib is rare, but can be painful and alarming. When it occurs, the end of one of the lower five ribs on either side of your rib cage loosens and slips from its place, lodging inside or outside the rib above it.
Usually, this happens when ligaments that bind your ribs together loosen. This is a “mechanical” problem and not a serious illness. (you can tell whoever wrote this does NOT have the problem.)
You may feel a sharp, stabbing pain accompanies by the sensation of rib movement. Or, you may feel a dull ache or burning that radiates to your back. The pain may worsen when you lie down, sit, bend forward, breathe deeply, cough or walk. The pain can last for several hours or weeks at a time.
Because slipping rib is so rare, it can be difficult to diagnose. Sometimes the pain can feel like the upper abdominal pain caused by pleurisy or diseases of the gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, duodenum or esophagus. However, when slipping rib is suspected, physicians may utilize a maneuver that involves pulling forward on your ribs. If this is painful, then you may have slipping rib.
Treatment usually involves pain medication, possible steroid injections, and lifestyle changes to avoid activities that case pain. In more severe cases, surgery to remove the slipping rib may be necessary.

I had been doctoring with this pain for a while. I was sent to a surgeon for gall bladder surgery. We were about to leave his office to set up the date for it, and he had a light bulb moment. He asked me to get up on his table again. He thought it was not gall bladder, (I did have a couple of small stones) but Painful Rib Syndrome was his diagnosis. He set up cortisone shots on my left side. He said if it helped the pain it would verify his diagnosis. The pain was gone by the time I left the hospital. I was pain free for about 8 months. When it returned I had another cortisone fix. That lasted about 3 months. I had the third set of shots. But I knew I would have to find some anther way to get rid of the pain.
A pain management Dr. had suggested the removal of a rib, or maybe 2 or 3. And no guarantee that I would get rid of the pain. I was set up with an appointment at the Mayo Clinic for a second opinion.
My niece had interviewed a Chiropractor for a news story. She also did acupuncture. And my niece thought I should give it a try. I think I had 3 treatments a week for 2 weeks. There was improvement! I continued treatment and canceled the Mayo appointment. I don’t know how it works, I don’t understand it.
Now I have a treatment at the beginning of each season, and in between if I need it.

My doctor tried telling me I had costochondritis but I'm not sure if I believe him completely. I was in a car accident two years ago and I had severe whiplash to my chest from the seat belt strap. As soon as I got out of the car my chest started seizing up and it got so bad that I couldn't sit up on my own or else I couldn't breathe. At the hospital they did x-rays and said I didn't have any broken ribs and after a few weeks the pain went away. However, it flares up from time to time, especially during periods when I'm not very active.
I went to the emergency room once last spring and then again a few months ago when the pain was really intense and wouldn't go away. That was when the doctor said I had a chest strain from the original injury. This makes the most sense, and the injured areas will get really sore and inflamed, just like with costochondritis. Plus, I'm aware that I have lots of congestion and scar tissue around this area, and problems with the cartelige. It's really gross sometimes cause I can feel it moving when I walk. Something new with it are the muscle spasms that I've been having since December. They feel like a vibration/quivering over my heart and left upper ribcage area. They made me really anxious at first of course, but now I understand them better.
I've been having stomach problems too and somehow I think it's all tied in together. Sometimes I'll have acidy gas gurgling in my stomach and sometimes this is up under my left ribcage, just over from my heart on my side. Should I really be feeling this that high up? I think it's weird.
If anyone has any advice or ideas please post them.
Thanks
I just want to know if muccas(fleme) is causing these pains or is it something else, and what can I do about it. I've got so many tests from doctors and nothing but I still have pains.

practically unbearable.
It begins right under the curve of the breast bone, then radiates
down and across the entire stomach area.
This condition in the past has been acute, but never lasted more than a week. Right now it appears to be here to stay.
What do you suggest? My job takes me out of town and i don't want to seek a new doctor. Just got home from three months of work out of town, leaving for Illinois on friday for about 30 days.
please advise.
Thank You,
In a lot of pain in Corpus Christi, tx.
Also depressed.
I had ultrasounds and Cat Scan and they didn't find anything other than inflamation (inflammation) around my rib cage due to the stress.
I've got crampings on the right side of the abdomen and occasionaly goes down to the pelvic area I also feel a little pinch underneath my chin and lots of back pain around the blades area so as you can see you are not alone.
For sometime I though I may suffer of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) Because some of my symtoms are similar, but my doctor disagreed.
If you know more about this please e-mail me I really need to inform myself about any clinical advances on this matter.
On the meantime I hope you'll get better, but you need to go see a doctor!

all of your symptoms are very familuar to me.
you should go to a doctor and hav him prescribe something (?RANIHEXAL?) to lower the acid levels in your stomach and allow the infection to heal.
but if you dont do that, the symptoms only get worse untill it eventually hurts to breath.
trust me, i know :\
not very pleasent, and its even worse to go to umpteen doctors and have them not no whats wrong with you.
but i eventually found out.
good luck all...
feel free to let me know whats happening... :)

What's dpressing is that gastrointestinal disorders are the hardest to correctly diagnose. I have no insurance and I deeply dread getting on that merry-go-round of doctors and testing and knowing that the chances of a correct diagnoses are slim.
My heart goes out to all of you who suffer this kind of pain. And I wish all of us luck in 'fixing' this....and now maybe that my pain is easing off I can get a few hours of sleep.
This is what was explained to me by my specialist, the pain in the chest (in most cases you could place your finger on the exact same spot) is caused by an inflamed area of the gullet caused by acid being present in the gullet, this also causes the pains felt across the back. The breathing problems I have been having is also due to acid in the gullet (airways restricting to prevent acid entering lungs).
Since receiving this information I have now managed to control my condition and I no longer suffer panic attacks, when I feel breathing difficulties I take an antacid (currently on Ranitidine 150mg) and the symptoms usually go away within 10 mins, the pain in my chest is still there but I no longer worry about it and this also helps as anxiety can cause your body to produce excess acid thus making it worse.
I am waiting to go for motility and ph tests (14/6/01) and depending on the results I might have to undergo an operation to repair my hiatus.
This is only information relating to my own condition and I would advise anyone with chest pains to see their doctor, but I thought that I would write this because I know that 10 years of worrying about my condition has probably made my condition worse.

Question Posted By: mechelle on Tuesday, January 19, 1999
i have recently started noticing mucas and blood in my stools. it is sort of like
i am constipated, but not really. when i do have a BM, it is loose and clotty. this is so gross.
i have been experiencing cramping in my lower abdominal area as well? what does this sound like?
any suggestions? please and thank you. :)
Dear Michelle,
Mucus and bloody, loose stools warrant further investigation to rule out infectious colitis, inflammatory bowel disease or other conditions. I would recommend that you have a gastroenterological evaluation to determine the source of your symptoms. You may benefit from a flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy (tests where a tube is introduced through the rectum and advanced up into the colon)to help diagnose the cause of your symptoms. I hope you find this information helpful.

Most people suffer from fecal impactions, and I've seen several people that suffer from stomach pain as well as mega colon get relief from a safe and effective treatment that most doctors arn't familiar with. The P.I.E. procedure ,with studies available from John Hopkins Pediatric Center as well as Texas Childrens Hospital. I would like to give everyone whose interested in finding out if this could be available for you please call the National Colon Health Center at (530)241-1500 and ask for David Gestri or Kristen Keefe.
