Stomach burning and reflux

by paulcharlier, Jun 15, 2007 12:00AM
Hi there, I was hoping somebody would be able to assist me in finding out what is wrong with me. Some history, have been diagnosed with a Hiatal hernia, not sure on the size, and have type 'A' Esophagitis, all of this confirmed by an Endoscopy. I have also had PH studies and a Monometry conducted, but came back with normal results for the manometry but with the PH studies showing a constant reading of around 8-9.9ph. I have taken Omeprazole, Lansprozole, Ranatidine, Rabeprazole all of which do not help. Also have been previously prescribed Domperidone and Metoclopromide. I have had chronic burning in my chest and stomach, pains in my stomach and on my right hand side, this is accompanied by vomiting, sometimes clear and yellow'ish, but also sometimes with food (after 3-4 hours of eating). I have had an ultra-sound to rule out gall stones. All of the above has been going on for nearly 9 months. I have recently started taking Domperidone 20mg three times a day, this seems to help the nausea and vomiting, but its effects wear off after 3-4 hours. After this time I start to get burning in my stomach, accompanied by burping and reflux is from what I can see and taste, my stomach contents. I have also been to A&E repeatedly after having several bad turns with vomiting abdominal pain and chest pain. Is it possible that ‘Bile’ is causing my problems?

Can anybody offer some advice as to what my symptoms point to?

Kind regards and thanks,

Paul

You have had a comprehensive evaluation for your symptoms, including some pretty specialized tests.

At this time, a gastric emptying scan can be considered to complete the evaluation.  Gastroparesis - or delayed gastric emptying - can lead to some of yor symptoms.

If GERD continues to be present despite maximal medical therapy, a surgical approach to treatment can be considered.

Testing for malabsorption - such as a blood test for celiac disease - can also be considered.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Sorry to keep adding details. For the record I do not smoke and drink very little alcohol. I am also normal weight, 71kg, 5ft7.

And to add, my teeth are wearing away very quickly according to my dentist.

Last addition, (I am quite anxious), I have had a blood test to rule out H.Pylori and other blood tests on my liver, thyroid come back normal.

The gastro doc does not answer supplemental questions unless you make a new post and pay the fee. Just the way it is on this forum.
Why don't you go the patient part of this site and see if anyone there has had experience of your symptoms and can answer your questions. - you don't have to pay a fee on that part of the site.It is on the upper left portion of the site.
Liz.

Whilst reading many entries in this blog and others about acid reflux, GERD etc and sufferring with same problems and a recurring stricture I am coming to the  conclusion that there is an underlying problem which the doctors are not recognising and not treating.
This underlying problem is 'fungus' which needs to be treated.
In fact, one of the entries in this blog does say that after he was treated for a fungus his Reflux problems went away.

I have alot of intestinal problems. Sounds like it could be peptic ulcers. I have GERD, Hitial hernia, slow moving colon, most likely due to my Multiple Sclerosis. I just had a EGD and my fifth colonoscopy yesterday. They found four peptic ulcers, I had my esophogus stretched to due stomach acid. I'm 41 yet these things I thought happens to older people.. Who knew??....

Hi - I have had 5 upper GI scopes so far to find out what is wrong with me and basically i get nowhere, so i am now so fed up i thought i'd share my symptoms. I have taken Zantac, Zoton fast tabs, and 500ml of gaviscon each month to quell the fire that burns in my stomach. I must admit i enjoy a drink but after one particular night 3 months ago i woke up with a searing burning pain at the top of my stomach and have felt unwell ever since. I had a scope a few days ago and been told that i have a hiatus hernia, and dyspepsia. So been told to keep taking the tablets. This i find  really fruustrating as i feel that i will always have a condition and there is nothing i can do! The tablets are obviously not working as i still get spasms and the odd soreness and paind at the top of my stomach and i havent even had a drink - so now im really fed up!
