Stomach distress since June. What is causing the bloat and nausea

by Dubbie, Sep 07, 2003 12:00AM
In June I began having burning pain and cramping in   epigastric area with bloating and slight nausea.  This would last for a day or two then disappear for at least a week before returning.  DUring these episodes had little to no appetite I began losing weight.  A CT of abdomen was negative as was an ultrasound of gall bladder.. Prevacid stopped the burning pain after abouta  month of talking then medication. An endoscopy and colonosopy were done last Thurs and were also negative.  THe troubles, however, are gettign worse..No appetite all week. HAve lost 6-8- pounds.  BLoating and pressure on upper abndomen also worse, not in intensity but  in frequency.  I have an old stomach surgery (polyps 1963) with scar tissue and a vagotomy was done then also.

I have discovered, by accident, that Atavan  works to stop the bloating, pressure and nausea. What is going on in my digestive system?  there must a diagnosis out there and help that does not involve taking tranqualizers.

You note dyspepsia and a negative endoscopy and colonoscopy.  I am going to assume that by endoscopy you mean an upper endoscopy.  Ultrasound and CT scan of the abdomen also negative.

Other tests to consider would be a 24-hr pH study, which would be the definitive study for GERD.  Another test would be a gastric emptying study to evaluate for gastroparesis that can lead to nausea.

Finally, if an H Pylori hasn't been performed, it should.  A positive H Pylori can be associated with these symptoms and are treated with antibiotics.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I very much agree about the gastric emptying test! I had that done and it confirmed that I had stomach motility problems. I know others that find that the ativan helps with it as well, but there are other good medications. First have the test, then do some more research on gastroparesis. I think you will find many familiar symptoms!
