Hao Scott,

I have seen this with a family member who had a bleeding ulcer. Almost bled to death. At that time we were told that if any of us see black tarry stools to immediately get to emerg. room. It is a sign internal bleeding. I wish you well~

A'ho,

Thans for the replies. Can you tell me more about when an underlying GI issue can suddenly surface? When can that happen, when does that happen?

Drinking could have something to do with it, but it may not be the cause of what's going on. That's why it's important to have it checked out. Lactose intolerance isn't going to cause blood in your stool/fecal material, but it can cause bowel habit changes. For many who  'get' lactose intolerance - which is due to the loss of a digestive enzyme - most people note slowly changing bowel habits. It's not typical to get 'all of a sudden I'm miserable' problems.

Scott, a lot of people can have an underlying GI issue that suddenly surface due to 'something else' like drinking, or a virus, or? If the drinking 'uncovered' something, stopping drinking is a good first step, but it may not change what's going on.

I know you probably don't want to go to the doctor, but this is something that really should be checked out even if the blood and the black stools happened however briefly and you haven't noted them in three weeks.

The blood was about three weeks ago & I havent seen anymore since, same goes for the black stools. Now I have gurgling & soft stools not water but soft.

Could the drinking have something to do with it? Could it be lactose intolerance? My mom was intolerant but I have never had an issue with lactose before.

Thanks...

Considering you're seeing blood and you're saying that you've had black stools, I'd really suggest you stop drinking completely and call your doc to make an appointment to get a few tests run. In addition, if you're taking any form of NSAID to try to tamp down any discomfort you're feeling you want want to discontinue using them.

The blood you're seeing mixed with the loose fecal material could be coming from irritated hemorrhoids, however black stools could mean you may be experiencing bleeding further up in your digestive tract. So that, as well as the 'fresher' blood needs to be checked out.

Hi Scott..have you been on antibiotics recently?  I always toss that out there in case C-difficile could be a factor - may wanna google the symptoms.  Feel better soon.

Is the blood in the toilet bright red?  Could be hemroids or a anal fiser.  Straining to go puts alot of pressure on delicate tissue which could cause little tears in the rectum.  Don't panic.    Switch to the brat diet.  Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast (dry is best, but ...)  You can add oatmeal to this, just cut out the milk.  These are the easiest to digest, and gives your system time to relax... and get well.

Stop drinking, at least for now.  Be sure to drink plenty of water, or clear liquids... like apple juice!

If you are not feeling better in a few days go see a doctor.
