Surgery Again for paraesophageal hernia?

by Dr. Erik, Nov 04, 2000 12:00AM
Dear Doctor:

I recently had thoracic surgery to repair a paraesophageal hernia for the third time in June. I was fine for 3 months then I started having abdominal pain. I had another upper GI and it showed a very small Paraesophageal hernia, again! I have an appointment this tuesday to see the surgeon again. I do not want surgery again! My questions are:   1)Do all paraesophageal hernias need to be surgically repaired? 2)Is there a less invasive way to repair this hernia even though I have had 3 open procedures including one laparotomy and two thoroctomy approaches?
Please give me some hope.

Dear Erik,
Paraesophageal hernias can be associated with a variety of symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, trouble swallowing.  Hernias do not necessarily have to be repaired, unless they are causing symptoms.  The techniques of repqir should be discusseed with your surgeon.

Eric, I can certainly relate to how you are feeling.  Since Feb. of 1999 I have had surgery four times.  Two laproscopic and 2 open procedures.  They had to pull muscles from my back to repair one very large hernia.  I think I probably undid the surgeries because I have severe bouts of dry heaves and I feel like I strain from the tip of my toes.  My food still doesn't want to go down, I have check pain, and I'm having acid again.  I had acid so badly that I had ulcers and it damaged my esophagus.  Good luck to you and know you aren't alone in your frustrations.
