Symptoms of Gallbladder Issues?

by tracire, Jan 28, 2007 12:00AM
Two weeks ago I started experiencing a weird fullness and pressure in the center of my abdomen, below my chest. I have had a lot of belching and gas as well. Last weekend, about 2 hours or so after eating I started having SEVERE stomach pain. At first I thought gas, but with no relief after taking Gas – X. Then, I began to have diarrhea and vomiting. Relief came after that. I vomited 4-5 times and had diarrhea through the next morning. It feels like there’s a fist under my right rib cage VERY often. Symptoms seem to be controlled, or lessened, by eating a bland diet (dry toast, applesauce, etc.). I also experience some mucous in stool from time to time. I have had what I think are gallbladder attacks probably three times prior. I have not been to the doctor yet. From everything thing I’ve read, I am almost sure it’s my gallbladder. I’m female, 34, I am overweight, but currently on Weight Watchers and losing. I have slight MVP, GERD, and take Prilosec OTC, otherwise healthy.

Questions:
1. What is your opinion on all of this?
2. Are my symptoms classic gallbladder?
3. How urgent is it to see a doctor? I really don’t want to have surgery!
4. Can losing weight and diet control gallbladder issues?

Thank you.

To answer your questions:
1) Gallbladder disease should be suspected first.  I would also consider upper GI diseases like GERD, an ulcer or inflammation of the upper digestive tract.

2) Yes, that is possible.

3) I would definitely see a physician.  You should go to the ER if the pain is serious.

4) If there is no evidence of acute cholecystitis (i.e. surgery not recommended), controlling weight can limit future attacks.

Follow-up with your personal physician is essential.
