Gallbladder disease is certainly high on the list and removing the gallbladder is a reasonable option.

You can also consider upper GI disease like GERD, an ulcer, or inflammation of the upper digestive tract.  An upper endoscopy can rule out these possibilities.

More specialized conditions like gastroparesis can be evaluated with a gastric emptying scan.  With the flushing symptoms, you can also consider carcinoid syndrome, which can be evaluated with a blood test looking for the metabolite 5-HIAA.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician or GI physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Hi there,CMorrill. I'm so sorry you're suffering so much. I am in a similar position...I'm 46, overweight at around 190lbs and have suddenly developed truly chronic pain under my right rib and below my shoulder blade at the back.

It's a horrible pain and is much worse at night, as I'm sure yours is; that is typical of gallstone pain - that it's worse at night. And the fact that you are finding fatty food - ANY food - makes the pain worse is typical also; every time you eat, your gall bladder squeezes to release bile into the digestive system and if it is full of gallstones and distended, well then it's gonna hurt! Because fatty foods need more bile to digest them, so more squeezing is involved = more pain!

If the doctors said that those test results they ran at the hospital are pretty much ok then you can be sure that means your liver and spleen and kidneys are ok. I'm afraid though that you are looking at having the gallbladder removed for sure, I would have thought.

Whilst it is not an emergency surgery and is usually done by 4 keyhole incisions, the fact is that gallstones don't dissolve or get passed out, they just stay and get bigger and if they get too big, well they can rupture the gallbladder and cause infection. Definitely better safe than sorry on this, and have the operation. Like you, I'm waiting for my operation date to come through...I have 6 large stones, each measuring 1" across.

Your headaches might need a little investigation also...although it is possible that they are caused by the fact that your digestive system isn't functioning as well as it should because of the gallbladder situation. I hope very much that your pain gets better not worse and that your operation comes up soon. Hope some of my research on this horrid condition has helped clear up a little of what you're going through...

...I also wanted to reassure you that it is not always related to being overweight that gallstones form; the received wisdom was always that if you were Fat, Fertile and Forty-plus, then you were a prime candidate for gallstones. My doc says though that lots of people get gallstones, young, old, fat and thin...so don't feel bad about being overweight. Having said that, you and I could both do with losing some pounds as that will not only help our hearts and lungs and cardio-vascular health, it also makes our operation a lot more simple if we aren't carrying too much extra tummy! I am trying to diet but failing dismally so far...!LOL!

I have been experiencing gallbladder problems as well with all of the typical symptoms. I've been on a low-fat diet and preparing to have it removed. Recently, I've had a new symptom that doesn't seem to fall into place with the other gallbladder pain: Lower back pain . It's been on either side of my back and seems to hurt evenly on both sides. My question is: Is this related to gallbladder problems  or is kidney pain and gallbladder pain both symptoms of a larger problem. I'm hoping it's just muscle pain

by Felix'sMum, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
To: liquidions
...that's unlikely to be related to gallbladder problems. The digestive system does not present in that part of the body...your kidneys are a much more likely candidate. Possibly you have a kidney infection which a simple urine dipstick test at your doctor's office would rule out. Get it checked out - you have enough to deal with coping with the gallbladder issues without adding to your burden. Good luck.
