The saga of Burping

by Bongo907, Mar 25, 2008 05:10PM
Hi you all,

I was reading the thread on the burping probem.  I have it too but basically there is no pain or smell (I think) but there is a heaviness in my chest and a feeling like I can't breathe.  I've had generalized anxiety all my life.  I think what we all have is one of it's many symptoms.  I know this sounds simple and obviously it's not everyone's explanation but I have found that if I am sick, more stressed, lack sleep, get too much sleep, drink alcohol, weigh too much, or just have the right chemical make up in my body at the time I will go on a burping marathon for days~!  It's so annoying.  The only thing that helps me is to take my medication for anxiety.  I have been to the ER, etc.  I have been there more than once.  I really think it's a symptom of anxiety.  I'm not an MD but that's what I've experienced.

This discussion is related to Excessive Burping.

Interesting. I have been recently burping a lot as well. But connected it more to what I eat. Though it is hard to pin point what causes it.
I also have generalized anxiety and take Zoloft.  How did you make the connection between anxiety and burping? Does it occur more at night?

To: Burping and Anxiety?
My brother just informed me that he is experiencing a similar connection between burping and anxiety.  He started burping excessively after meals right around the time that our father went in the hospital for quadruple bypass surgery a year and 1/2 ago.

Any additional information or experience that anyone has with this connection would be much appreciated.  I'm guessing that dealing directly with the anxiety might be a beneficial approach?  What has worked for people so far?

Thanks much!

I had a bad bout with anxiety a couple of years ago and have since started the burping thing sometime since then. My doc gave me some prevacid (i think) but I knew it was not acid reflux so I never even tried to take it. I am not sure which comes first the chicken or the egg cause when I notice I am burping constantly I do feel kinda anxious but I chalked that up to wondering what the heck is wrong.
It's kinda sad that the original discussion was started in 2000 and I haven't seen a diagnosis for what this is?
