Thrush after Liver Transplant

by Analie__0, Jul 29, 1998 12:00AM
I had a liver/kidney transplant four and a half years ago due to PKD.  About 18 months ago, I began having problems with thrush on my tongue.  I've tried Nystatin and Diflucan for weeks at a time.  They help the problem, but don't get rid of it.  Is there any other treatment?

Dear Analie:
I appreciated your question.  We have a very active liver transplant program here at Henry Ford and I appreciate what a problem “thrush” can be.  The most helpful thing to do with thrush is to avoid antibiotics and lower the immunosuppressive drugs as much as possible.  Unfortunately, I assume your transplant physicians are pretty savvy and they’ve already done this.  We find mycelex troches (taken 5X a day) are pretty effective in preventing thrush from coming back but it is inconvenient.  You might have to take if for a long time or indefinitely until your doctors can lower your immunosuppressive drugs.  There are more exotic or experimental drugs for people who have “resistant” thrush or candida but I’m not really sure you fit into that category.
I hope this information is helpful to you.  Good luck with this problem.   If you have any additional questions or concerns, you can post them through MEDHELP or contact us directly at Henry Ford.  The direct number to our liver clinic is: (313) 556-8865.
