Tired of the burning

It all started with Asthma & Allergy testing because of coughing, sore throat etc.  I ended up at a ENT for speech therapy & they found they could barely see my vocal cords due to my throat being raw & swollen.  They said I had reflux and sent me to a gastro Dr.  After more testing and a endoscopy & bravo they said that I only had a small hiatal hernia and no reflux and sent me back to the ENT.  They said I had LPR and put me on 30mgs Prevacid 2xdaily. Six months later I am no better and they sent me to another gastro Dr.  Looking at my history (gall bladder removed in 2005)and tests he thinks that now I have alkaline reflux (bile reflux).  I was kept on the Prevacid and he added Carafate 10mls 4xdaily and said it would be about a month before I would know if its working.  I know that it has been only a few days but I am miserable and no one has checked for Bile in my stomach or there was no new endoscopy done even though my symptoms are worse.  I belch, cough, have tons of mucous and my throat is constantly burning and raw.  I am miserable and I need relief.  I was also told that there is no Dr in my area that deals with bile reflux and they will need to send me out of town but they have not confirmed whether it is or not and I am tired of the guessing games, I need an answer.

This discussion is related to bile reflux, roux-en-y surgery.

You need to ask your doc to do a 2 channel pH monitoring to check for both bile and acid reflux. It's the quickest way to find out what type of reflux you've got. Most facilities should be able to do this form of pH monitoring.

In the meantime, cut way back on any fats you're eating, including any form of dairy that you're taking in. You may also want to talk to the doc about adding a bile binding resin like questran to try to bind the bile and take it out of your system.
